Help

- The incumbent will assist as a liaison between the sleep lab, pulmonary function lab, outpatient PAP clinic veteran care needs and prosthetics.
- The incumbent instructs and directs patients in spirometry tests and can maintain a certificate of completion from an approved NIOSH course in Screening Spirometry and (FVC, SVC, MVV, Closing-Volume and Flow-Volume Loop maneuvers), diffusing capacity tests and lung volume studies.
- The incumbent administers drugs for special procedures such as broncho-provocation (methacholine) and Pre and Post bronchodilation spirometry. The incumbent will determine bronchodilator medication to be used based upon questions/answers from the patient relative to their cardiac history.
- He/She must keep detailed records of tests and measurements performed and keep and record quality control and timeliness of studies and data.
- The incumbent must have a basic knowledge of pulmonary physiology necessary to differentiate between abnormal test results, malfunctioning equipment, spurious information, and a poorly motivated patient.
- He/She will perform any calculations necessary for the measurement of spirometry diffusion capacity, lung volumes, and the work of breathing. This will necessitate a firm understanding of algebra and proficiency with a calculator.
- The incumbent performs some administrative duties in the pulmonary function laboratory including scheduling outpatients which encompasses interpreting the physician's request to block sufficient time to complete the testing process. He/she is also responsible for answering the telephone and providing information for; patients, physicians both in and outside of this institution. This includes placing orders for prosthetic equipment covered in the home oxygen program (increases in tanks, change in tank configuration, CPAP/BiPAP equipment, home oxygen RX: changes, pick-up orders, and problem solving.
- He/She is responsible for coordinating the outpatient scheduling of special studies; home oxygen, broncho-provocation, 6 minute walk tests, overnight pulse oximetry studies, CPAP/BiPAP setups, and mask fits; this to insure patients, tests and other daily routines are not compromised.
- He/She will collaboratively consult with physicians and other healthcare professionals for complex respiratory care to develop care plans to provide favorable patient outcomes.
- Incumbent will perform: home oxygen evaluations, home oxygen re-evaluations and oxygen titration ordered by a physician or nurse practitioner. Home oxygen evaluations will include: 1.) room air resting pulse oximetry and a single stick arterial puncture as policy dictates, 2.) room air/oxygen six minute exercise with repeat ABG and 3.) repeat six minute exercise on oxygen to determine individual's supplemental oxygen needs. Incumbent will provide: 1.) accurate, error free reports to physicians for interpretation by fellows/staff, 2.) detailed assessment of patients equipment needs based on age and mobility requirements, 3.) work in close collaboration with staff responsible for the home oxygen program.
- The incumbent will demonstrate knowledge of CPAP, BiPAP, equipment and systems utilized by the contracted home care vendor and the equipment used by our prosthetics department. Incumbent will assist patients with setups including data card programming, general information provided to PCPs with potential patients for inclusion in the CPAP/BiPAP program. Handle changes and ordering equipment, participates with pressure setngs, downloading data and preparing reports, masks types and styles and assisting with fitng and demonstrating the ability to work with most types of previously issued equipment (within guidelines). Demonstrate an understanding of CPAP/BiPAP and how oxygen is/can be intergraded into the RX: maintain programming and downloading of patient CPAP/BiPAP data cards to include preparation of report for interpretation of data for inclusion in patients chart.
- Overnight pulse oximetry to include in-service of patient, logging in/out of instrument, and programming and downloading of patient overnight pulse oximetry data to include preparation of report for interpretation of data for inclusion in patients chart.
- The incumbent participates daily in planning procedures involving new or un-standardized techniques. These may involve new pieces of equipment or adaptation of existing equipment to new applications. Incumbent participates in all research projects undertaken by the pulmonary function laboratory by various other departments in this and associated institutions.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:

  • United States Citizenship: Must be a U.S. Citizen. Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Education: Individuals must have successfully completed a respiratory care program accredited by the CoARC or its successor.
  • Licensure: Persons appointed or reassigned to RRT positions in the GS-0601 series must possess and maintain for the duration of employment a full, current and unrestricted license from a state to practice as an RRT.
  • Credential: Persons appointed or reassigned to RRT positions in the GS-0601 series must possess and maintain for the duration of employment a valid, current, unrestricted credential of RRT.
GS-11 Grade Requirements:
Experience, Licensure and Credential. Candidates must have: i. One year of creditable experience equivalent to the GS-09 grade level demonstrating the clinical competencies described at that level. ii. Hold an active license and RRT credential.
AND
Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills and Abilities. In addition to the requirements above, candidates must demonstrate all the following KSAs: i. Ability to collaboratively consult with physicians and other healthcare professionals for complex respiratory care to develop care plans to provide favorable patient outcomes. ii. Skill in evaluating the efficacies of therapeutic modalities. iii. Skill in performing advanced airway and ventilation management.
