Help
  • Use specialized techniques, skills, tools, handheld computers, desktop computer workstation and manufacturer's keying system software to service, repair and install electronic card lock keying systems.
  • Determine if locking devices have been tampered with and notify appropriate personnel.
  • Work with Physical Security to install high security locks as required.
  • Recommend locking mechanisms and installation of locks to use for specialized security areas.
  • Service a variety of commercially manufactured locking devices including those containing such features as dual locking capabilities and interacting mechanically with timing mechanisms, other combination locks or actuating mechanisms.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed Secret background investigation.
  • Completion of pre-employment Physical Examination and annual examination thereafter to ensure the required level of physical health and ability/fitness to perform the duties of the position.
  • Position requires to obtain and maintain a Government Security Services (GSA) certification within 6 months of employment.
  • Position requires the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles.
  • Position requires shift work to provide coverage on evenings, weekends, holidays, or special situations.
  • Position has a requirement to lift up to 50 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.
  • Appointment to this position is subject to a one-year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315.
  • Position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 5% of the time.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

There is no specific length of training or experience required. However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a Locksmith ~ without more than normal supervision. Installing, adjusting, troubleshooting, or repairing a variety of commercially manufactured locking devices such as cylinder (key) locks, master locks, dead bolts, night locks, electric pushbutton type locks, double cylinder locks, sensor door locks, mortise rim, combination (simplex, cipher), and hotel-style key card locks, etc.; applying technical manuals, manufacturer's diagrams or specifications while repairing and/or testing the locking mechanisms; and establishing master key coding systems. - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

NOTE: To meet the basic eligibility, you must receive at least two points on the screen-out element indicated above and must have an average of two points on all the job elements listed below. Your application will be further evaluated to determine if you meet the best qualified cut-off for referral to the selecting official.


  • Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal Supervision (Screen-out Element)
  • Physical Effort: Work assignments require standing, stooping, bending, kneeling for prolonged periods as well as working in cramped and awkward positions. Incumbent is required to lift items weighing up to approximately 50 pounds.
  • Working Conditions: Work is normally performed in a well-lighted, heated, and ventilated area. Occasionally work is done outside in inclement weather or in areas that are drafty and poorly lighted. Incumbent is exposed to the possibility of cuts, bruises, scrapes, and burns.
