Duties

Help
  • Apply mathematics, statistical analysis, modeling/simulation, machine learning, data mining and/or other scientific principles, methods, and techniques germane to the development and proper use of artificial intelligence (AI) applications.
  • Advise senior leadership on Artificial Intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) principles, uses, methods, and application development.
  • Apply civil works policy, as well as understanding of data and technology initiatives that can support the fulfillment of civil works mission information and data requirements.
  • Recommend data collection, curation, integration, and retention requirements; and make recommendations for improvements to approaches, methods and algorithms, based on knowledge of best practices.
  • Develop mathematical or statistical models for evaluation, identification, collection, and analysis of all data used to support assigned projects or program(s).
  • Prepare presentations, write reports, build data visualization products, and communicates technical results and actionable insights to decision-makers and stakeholders with varying levels of analytic sophistication

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Basic Requirements for Data Scientist:

1). A bachelor's degree (or higher degree) in mathematics, statistics, computer science, data science or field directly related to the position. The degree must be in a major field of study (at least at the baccalaureate level) that is appropriate for the position. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.)

OR

2) A combination of education and experience: Courses equivalent to a major field of study (30 semester hours) as shown above, plus additional education or appropriate experience. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.)

In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: 1) Use artificial intelligence (AI) techniques and methodologies such as machine learning, predictive analysis, prescriptive analysis and optimization, and other emerging analytical techniques; 2) assess and extract information from historical datasets; creates appropriate statistical, algorithmic, mining, forecasting, predictive, and visualization techniques; 3) advise on civil works policy as well as data and technology initiatives supporting the delivery of civil works programming; and 4) interpret and apply data information of advance Artificial Intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), and data management efforts to ensure compliance with the Department of Defense (DOD) and Army regulations and policies. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-12 or above).

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
