Help
  • Performs as a member of team of specialists with focus on Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA).
  • Participate in the planning and execution of all phases of NAGPRA projects, which includes drafting budgets and schedules; developing research designs; developing field review strategies for human skeletal remains and collections assessments.
  • Use physical anthropological, bio-archaeological and forensic methods to assess age, sex, and ancestry on human remains.
  • Use archaeological and contextual information for identifying funerary objects, sacred objects, and objects of cultural patrimony.
  • Research Native American history and prehistory to assess cultural affiliation determinations.
  • Use software such as FORDISC or other current forensic techniques.
  • Complete written report of results that includes inventory reports, skeletal assessments, compliance documentation and provides recommendations.
  • Conduct all NAGPRA review phases in accordance with current archaeological and anthropological standards.
  • Perform rehousing needs required for proper curation of archaeological collections and human remains identified for rehabilitation or repatriations.
  • Perform archeological and museum research to determine NAGPRA applicability.
  • Assist in the development of guidelines, policies, procedures and NAGPRA plans to ensure systematic compliance with appropriate laws and regulations and to comply with curation regulations.
  • Participate in Native American consultation related to NAGPRA collections and claims for repatriation.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Basic Requirements:
Archeologist, 0193 Series
Anthropologist, 0190 Series


In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:


Minimum Qualifications GS-09:

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes evaluating and assessing anthropological/archeological collections to determine items subject to Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA); drafting reports, such as inventory reports, skeletal assessments, and/or compliance documentation; and using physical anthropological, archeological, bioarcheological, or forensic methods to assess age, sex, and/or ancestry of human remains. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07).
OR
Education: Master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as archeology, anthropology, or museum work.
OR
Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the first year (total graduate semester hours minus 18) by 18. Add the two percentages.

Minimum Qualifications GS-11:
Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes evaluating and assessing anthropological/archeological collections to determine items subject to Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA); drafting reports, such as inventory reports, skeletal assessments, and/or compliance documentation; using physical anthropological, archeological, bioarcheological, or forensic methods to assess age, sex, and/or ancestry of human remains and types of artifacts in collections; and researching archeological contextual information, Native American history and prehistory, and/or site information to recommend aboriginal/cultural affiliation determinations or repatriations. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-09).
OR
Education: Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as archeology, anthropology, or museum work.
OR
Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the second year (total graduate semester hours minus 36) by 18. Add the two percentages.

Education

  • Position may be filled as a time-limited promotion, reassignment or change to lower grade not to exceed (NTE) 2 Years by a current permanent Army employee. Time-limited promotions may be extended up to a maximum of five years. Time-limited reassignments and changes to lower grade may exceed five years; however, return rights may be impacted.
