Duties

Help

This position is part of the Appraisal and Valuation Services Office, Office of the Secretary of Interior. The incumbent will be responsible for collecting and analyzing geologic, mineralogic, and commodity market data associated with various deposits and properties.

  • Serves as a geologist or petroleum engineer on a multi-disciplinary team of mineral specialists supporting broad range of fluid and non-fluid mineral assessments, market and valuation analyses performing several functions including:
  • Collecting and assisting in the evaluation and analysis of relevant data for mineral resources on Federal and Indian lands including geologic conditions to estimate quality, determine occurrence and development potential among other related aspects.
  • Gathering and synthesizing mineral commodity data, permitting information, and existing mineral operations information, etc. to conduct economic evaluation analysis and to assist in the determination of a market value for a commodity or property.
  • Appling knowledge of laws, regulations, and policy concerning mineral development and utilizing geographic information systems and modeling methods to conduct analyses.
  • Composing mineral evaluations and valuation reports for non-technical audiences.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

A. One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-07 level. Specialized experience is that which has equipped the applicant with the competencies to successfully perform the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience for this position includes but is not limited to: gathering and evaluating mineral resource data, synthesizing mineral commodity information, assisting with mineral evaluation analysis and drafting reports; OR
B. Two years of progressively higher level graduate level education leading to a Master's degree or Master's or equivalent graduate degree in Geology, Physical Science and/or related Engineering Science, or Professional Engineering; OR
C. Combination of education and experience as listed above.
D. FOR APPLICANTS TO THE ENGINEERING, GS-0881 SERIES ONLY: Successful completion of a 5-year program of study of at least 160 semester hours leading to a bachelor's degree in engineering and 1 year of appropriate professional experience.
E. FOR APPLICANTS TO THE ENGINEERING, GS-0881 SERIES ONLY: A combination of superior academic achievement AND 1 year of appropriate professional experience.

Telework Suitability:
The duties of this position are suitable for occasional telework and the selectee may be allowed to telework with supervisor approval and if they meet the eligibility criterion in the 2010 Telework Act. OR

Stipulations of Employment:
This term appointment may be extended up to a maximum total period of 4 years or terminated at any time at management discretion. Selection does not confer eligibility to be promoted or reassigned to other positions or to be non-competitively converted to a career-conditional appointment.

Selection for this term position may require serving a 1-year trial period.
