Duties

Help
  • Conduct complete examination of patients to determine the nature, extent, and seriousness of their condition.
  • Respond on-site to accidents and other emergencies involving injury and illnesses.
  • Operate an emergency or patient transport vehicle and select the most efficient route to and from the site of the emergency.
  • Work in the medical treatment facility emergency room to provide patient care within the scope of practice and treatment protocols when not on emergency runs.

  • Male applicants born after December 31, 1959, must complete a Pre-Employment Certification Statement for Selective Service Registration.
  • One year trial/probationary period may be required.
  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position has specific initial background investigation and periodic re-verification requirements since its duties require interaction with children and youth under the age of eighteen (18) years of age on a recurring basis.
  • This position is subject to annual seasonal influenza vaccinations. Applicants tentatively selected for this position will be required to sign a statement consenting to seasonal influenza vaccinations or must provide a recognized exemption.
  • Immunization screening is required. Hepatitis B immunization is required for all positions with direct patient contact. Applicants may be required to show proof of other immunizations depending on the type of position.
  • All Health Care Providers must be able to obtain and maintain current Basic Life Support (BLS) training and certification that is sponsored by the American Heart Association (AHA) and/or American Red Cross (ARC).
  • Must obtain certification in the Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) course within 90 days or as soon as a class is available.
  • A pre-placement medical examination is required.
  • This position is a Testing Designated Position (TDP) subject to a pre-employment drug screening, and random testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
  • Applicants must be able to fulfill non-privileged professional credential requirements.
  • Rotating on-call weekends and holidays.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain certification in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS).
  • Work is subject to rotating shifts and/or irregular tour of duty to include weekends, nights, and/or holidays.
  • This position requires National Registry Paramedic certification (NREMT-P) within one year of being hired.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Specialized Experience for GS-6 level: One year of specialized experience which includes demonstrated experience treating routine medical emergencies under close supervision and performing maintenance and/or restocking of medical and supplies. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-05).

OR

Education: A half year (i.e., 9 semester hours) of graduate level education in a field directly related to Applied Science of Emergency Medical Services (EMS), Emergency Management, Fire Science, or Public Administration.

Combination of Education and Experience: Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) by 9. Add the two percentages.

Specialized Experience for GS-7 level: One year of specialized experience which includes demonstrated experience treating a wide variety of medical emergencies under close supervision; practicing communicable disease control and/or sterilization techniques; AND performing preliminary assessments of patient condition to follow prescribed protocol treatment options. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06).

OR

Education: One full year of graduate level education in a field directly related to the work of the position, such as Applied Science of Emergency Medical Services (EMS), Emergency Management, Fire Science, or Public Administration.

OR

Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) by 18. Add the two percentages.

Licensure/Certification: Newly appointed civilian EMTs who are not NREMT-certified must, as a minimum, possess EMT certification from the State in which the employing MTF is located (Kansas).

Education

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
