Duties

Help
  • Repairs and maintains a variety of large commercial and industrial refrigeration and air conditioning systems.
  • Dismantles, repairs, and reassembles testing units such as pumps, impellers, compressors, chillers, receivers, condensers, and evaporators.
  • Calibrates and repairs large pneumatic control systems and repairs steam control systems.
  • Troubleshoots complex problems and installs and make extensive repairs on large industrial and commercial and air conditioning systems.
  • Tests system operation and detects component malfunctions.
  • Designs layouts with complex special requirements for areas with sensitive equipment.

Qualifications

Applicants will be rated in accordance with the Office of Personnel Management Qualification Standard for Trades and Labor Occupations. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties at the level for which you are applying. Emphasis is placed on how you gained the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time, and the required ability or potential to perform the job. Applicants who do not meet the screen-out element (SOE) will be eliminated from further competition. The SOE and minimum qualifications for this position is:

  • Ability to do the work of an Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic without more than normal supervision (SOE): Perform the common tasks of the job to be filled but under close supervision, such as receiving general guidance on assignments related to maintenance work on large industrial and commercial air conditioning systems.
Selective Placement Factors:-
- Certification: Must possess a EPA Universal Technician certification.
- License: Must possess valid state driver's license.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Physical Effort: The incumbent frequently carries and sets up parts and equipment that weights up to 50 pounds. Uses hoists and pulleys when removing units such as large compressors. Makes repair from hard-to-reach places. Stop, bends, and kneels for long periods of time.

Working Conditions: Works outside on top of tall buildings, in drafty attic spaces, and in cramped areas with low overheads. Wears face mask and protective clothing when there is a possibility of exposure to toxic refrigerants.
