Duties

The Marine Machinery Mechanic:

  • Diagnoses malfunctions on ships, repairs, and maintains machinery and equipment in accordance with, schematic drawings, operations manuals, and manufacturer's specifications.
  • Performs adjustments and repairs to maintain the operation of machines and equipment by identifying malfunctions or defects, repairing or replacing worn, damaged, or defective parts, and maintaining propulsion systems, diesel engines, and other engine components aboard watercraft.
  • Repairs and installs mechanical equipment aboard watercraft and related harbor and dock machinery, while testing, repairing, and rebuilding electrical and mechanical components of gasoline and diesel-powered inboard and outboard engines.
  • Troubleshoots, repairs, overhauls, and tests various marine engines and equipment using computerized diagnostic tools, determining when major equipment repairs cannot be completed in their installed configuration. 
  • Disassembles, overhauls, tests, and reinstalls major equipment such as steering systems, reverse gears, reduction gears, clutches, hydraulic motors, pumps, winches, and vessel components, as well as cleaning, repairing, lapping, and testing fuel injectors and injector pumps.

The ideal candidate should possess the ability to diagnose defects and determine trade techniques to be used in the final repair and rebuild of a variety of highly sophisticated marine vessels and equipment.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

  • SELECTIVE SERVICE: Males born after 12/31/1959 must be registered for the Selective Service.

  • PROBATIONARY PERIOD: You must complete a one-year probationary period (unless already completed).
  • TIME-IN-GRADE: Federal applicants must have served 52 weeks at the next lower grade in the competitive or excepted service in the executive branch to satisfy time-in-grade restrictions contained in 5 CFR 300, Subpart F.
  • DEU REQUIREMENTS: Applicants selected under delegated examining procedures may be required to successfully complete a one-year probationary period (unless already completed).

Qualifications

Qualifications for the position are based on the  training, experience, or other requirements that determine which applicants would be able to perform satisfactorily in the position to be filled.

To qualify for the Marine Machinery Mechanic your experience should include experience equal or equivalent to the following:

  • Ability to maintain and diagnose issues of marine vessels and equipment including reciprocating and centrifugal pumps, diesel engines, turbines, compressors, blowers, evaporators, condensers, and shipboard mechanical, electrical, or hydraulic control systems.
  • Ability to improvise replacement assembly, repair, and troubleshooting techniques for marine vessels and equipment when standard procedures do not suffice.
  • Ability to abide by safety procedures, programs, policies, environmental laws, and other regulations.

Additional Conditions of Employment:

PHYSICAL EFFORT: The work is arduous at times, requiring climbing up to 50 foot vertical ladders, frequently lifting and carrying heavy objects up to 45 pounds.  The employee is required to push, pull, kneel, crouch, stoop, and working in awkward positions and close quarters. Heavy exertion, excessive walking, performance of arduous and hazardous assignments are required.

WORKING CONDITIONS: The employee is exposed to extreme heat, cold, high winds, rough water, and slippery surfaces. The employee must be alert and safety conscious at all times due to the nature of the work and surroundings. Work is performed both indoors and outside. Employee is subject to prevailing weather conditions, temperature extremes, and wet and/or icy conditions when working outside. Employee is subject to irritations and discomfort from noise, dust, grease, heat, and fumes when working either inside or outside. Work is performed on parts and systems that are dirty, oily, or greasy. Employee works in spaces containing installed asbestos. Employee is subject to cuts, bums, chemical irritations, bruises, electrical shock, and other injuries resulting from falls or hazards of the occupation when making repairs, or when positioning and/or moving equipment. Employee must follow prescribed safety practices, and use appropriate safety equipment (e.g., protective ear devices, hard hats, hard-toe shoes, gloves, respirators, protective clothing, etc.) which are provided. Some safety items may be uncomfortable to wear, or may be required to be worn for prolonged periods of time. In summary, the working environment is typical of, and includes all the hazards of, a shipboard, shipyard, and/or marine environment, including working in adverse climatic conditions and on slippery decks. May be required to work outside of normal hours in response to emergent conditions within the fleet or aboard out ported ships.
