Help
  • Operate a backhoe to excavate and backfill earth for repair and replacement of valves, fire hydrants, water and sewer lines.
  • Construct or repair sanitary and storm sewer lines regardless of size, ensuring proper routing, placement, slant, slope, fall and operation.
  • Construct and repair water distribution lines, and related accessories, such as fire hydrants, buried gate valves, stop and waste valves, post indicator valves, irrigation systems, and backflow prevention devices.

There is no specific length of training or experience required. However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Maintenance Mechanic (Utility Systems Repairer) ~ without more than normal supervision. Have the ability to perform common Maintenance duties. Have experience operating equipment such as a backhoe to remove and fill in dirt, gravel and other materials. Construct and repair sewer and water lines ensuring proper routing slope and operation for a large area such as a military base. Use tools such as such as flexible sewer rodding, vacuum machines, hydraulic high velocity sewer cleaner, and common hand and power tools to perform the work of this position. Constructs items such as cement block manholes and catch basins also mixes cement mortar with power driven cement mixer or by hand and installs septic tanks. Ability to do the work of the position without more than normal supervision. - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

  • Physical Effort: The incumbent works in cramped quarters both inside and outside when installing or making repairs to water/sewer systems, requiring frequent stooping, bending, kneeling and climbing. Frequently is required to work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Subject to strain caused by vibration and jolting of equipment when excavating hard material. Frequently lifts, carries and sets up parts and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds and occasionally heavier.
  • Working Conditions: The work is done inside and outside, and is usually dirty, dusty and greasy. The works in close quarters, in manholes of various depths and in deep trenches subject to cave-in. Required to make repairs and installations in bad weather, frequently exposed to mud and water. The incumbent is subject to scrapes, burns, inhalation of noxious gases, infections from unsanitary work sites (e.g., sewers, waste traps, grease traps) and injury from equipment overturning.
