Duties

Help
  • Assigns specific codes to medical records, sequencing and determining codes to accurately reflect the resources and procedures used in the care of the patients.
  • Ensures compliance with regulatory and third-party insurance requirements in utilizing the ICD-10-CM, PCS, CPT, and HCPCS LEVEL II coding books.
  • Performs quantitative analysis and checks medical record for completeness, accuracy, and compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Performs various functions involving review, analysis, evaluation, and management coding of diagnostic and treatment procedures contained in outpatient medical records with third party payers.
  • Identifies and documents any incident which may denote a potential compensatory event or questionable breach of quality of care delivered.
  • Codes complicated medical records having diagnostic, surgical and therapeutic procedures on specific DRGs that are identified as difficult to classify.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment.
  • Appointment to this position is subject to a one-year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315.
  • This position has a mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirement and is subject to annual vaccination.
  • Employees assigned to a medical treatment facility are required to be screened for applicable immunizations or pre-existing immunity based on occupational risk, regardless of job series.
  • This position may require a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement 5% of the time.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the education requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: (1) inputting data from and to an automated medical record coding system; (2) knowledge of coding books and procedures and (3) identifying the correct medical code for each procedure. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-05).

Certification from American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) or American Academy of Professional Coders is highly preferred.

Education

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
