Help

On a regular and recurring basis, work involves installation, maintenance, and repair of steam and plumbing systems and equipment such as high, medium, and low pressure steam supply lines; vacuum and condensate return lines; hot and cold water systems; drainage lines; gas and sewage lines; steam heating; steam generation: steam generators; flash and expansion tanks; condensate, vacuum, and circulating pumps; radiators; autoclaves; sterilizers; flatwork ironers; tumblers; dishwashing machines; fire hydrants; automatic fire sprinkler systems; water heaters; gas cooking equipment; sanitary and storm sewer; water closets, tubs, and showers; etc.

Incumbent plans and lays out work, figures pressures, and ensures that piping, valves, fittings, reduction couplings, elbows, and other parts are proper for the work. Test systems and equipment after completion of work for proper circulation, flow, pressure, and leak-free joints.

Incumbent responds to after work emergency calls from the Boiler Plant Operator and requests of the Administrator, Administrative Officer of the Day, Engineering Chief and Associate Chief, and by telephone call-out to make repairs of work as required.

Familiarizes self with how job activities impact VA's goal to implement sound stewardship practices that are protective of the air, water, land, and other natural and cultural resources. This may include activities associated with proper storage, handling and disposal and/or recycling of chemicals and wastes associated with their trades. In accordance with the goals of the VA GEMS program, seeks to cost-effectively meet or exceed compliance with applicable federal, state, and local environmental public health and resource protection law, regulations, and VA requirements.

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities.
