Duties

Help
  • Troubleshoot components and disassemble, repair, and/or reassemble complete devices and/or subassemblies of various electrical systems.
  • Inspect, clean, repair, and/or maintain lighting, heating, emergency power control, and/or wiring systems.
  • Plan and determine the routing, placement, type, size, gauge, balance, load, continuity and safe operation of circuits, systems, equipment, and controls.
  • Monitor the operation of the fiber optic communication system to assure its operational integrity.
  • Assemble and/or disassemble electrical systems, mechanical systems, subsystems, standby systems and related equipment to determine extent of repairs, overhaul and/or replacement parts needed.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position has a requirement to lift up to 45 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.
  • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
  • The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles.
  • Appointment to this position is subject to a one year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315. While probationary the incumbent can be terminated with limited appeal rights.
  • This position requires the employee to handle hazardous waste and the employee must successfully complete training in hazardous waste management procedures within six (6) months after job appointment.
  • This position requires the employee to work in a chemical limited area and the employee must meet and maintain all requirements for the Unescorted Access Program within six (6) months after job appointment.
  • This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 5% of the time.

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

There is no specific length of training or experience required. However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of an Electrician (Communication Cable Splicer) without more than normal supervision. I am skilled in reading and interpreting layout sheets to include wiring diagrams and schematics; installing copper and fiber optic cable and employing fusion splicing; and installing new equipment systems or subsystems to replace faulty or worn items. I work under normal supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed. - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

Physical Effort: Uses arms, head, and legs during work process. Moderate to heavy physical exertion is required. Make repairs and installations from ladders, scaffolding, platforms, and where parts being repaired are in hard-to-reach places. This requires standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing, and working in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Frequently lifts and carries items weighing up to 45 pounds and occasionally an item weighting greater than 45 pounds. Assistance is usually available for lifting heavier items. Uses coordination of eyes, hands, legs, and body in installing, repairing, or testing electrical, electronic or refrigeration/air-conditioning equipment in confined spaces.


Working Conditions: Works inside and outside during performance of duties. Subject to extreme heat, cold and inclement weather conditions. Subject to falls from poles, booms, ladders, and scaffolding; strains from working in awkward position; and less serious cuts and bruises when handling tools and materials. Frequent sitting, standing, walking, bending, crouching, reaching, and/or stooping is required. Occasional climbing and working in high places are required. There is exposure to dirt, grease, noise, odor, smoke, fumes, occasionally asbestos, carcinogens, chemicals, radiation, etc. Frequently exposed to the possibility of strains, cuts, scrapes, bruises, burns and electrical shock. Working conditions are considered in the evaluation of the job.
