Duties

Help
  • Maintain and repair installation water supply, distribution and treatment plant, equipment and systems.
  • Maintain and repair all industrial equipment in water booster pumping plant, remote pumping stations, such as deep well pumping equipment, high-lift centrifugal and turbine pumps, variable feed chlorinators and chemical feed pumps.
  • Monitor, troubleshoot and perform minor electronic and mechanical repairs on computer control and alarm system consisting of central controls at the main building and 19 secondary control systems on the geographically dispersed wells and equipment.
  • Install, repair, maintain, and modify any portion of the water distribution systems including the mains, feeder lines, various altitude, air relief and gate, valves, fire hydrants, etc.
  • Perform tasks associated with water treatment where the quality of the water is below acceptable and prescribed standards requiring filtration processes to change the taste, odor, physical, chemical, and/or bacteriological content of the water.
  • Perform a full range of waste water treatment plant operator duties.
  • Operate a 5-ton maintenance vehicle, 2200 gallon Septic Truck, and/or 4000 gallon Septic Pumper Truck upon request from customers or as needed in the regular course of the day or after hour emergency.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position is subject to random drug testing in accordance with Omnibus Transportation Employee Testing Act of 1991 and Army Regulation 600-85 once the CDL is obtained.
  • Must obtain and maintain a valid State Commercial Driver's License (CDL) in one of the 50 US states or possessions with appropriate endorsements within 12 months of employment.
  • This position requires a medical evaluation/examination for new hires and current employees and are required to carry and maintain their medical examination card while operating CDL required vehicles.
  • Must obtain and maintain state of New Mexico Certification for water supply and wastewater treatment Level 2 and 3 Certification within 24 months.
  • This position requires the incumbent to work rotating shifts that include weekends and holidays. Days off are rotated between Tuesday/Wednesday and Saturday/Sunday.
  • Position requires the incumbent to be on a rotating two (2) week on-call status during non-regularly scheduled hours that includes weekends and holidays
  • Incumbent required to perform the duties of a Water Treatment Plant Operator two (2) weeks out of three (3) and work weekends one (1) week out of three (3).
  • Incumbent required to perform the duties of a Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator one (1) week out three (3).
  • Position requires the incumbent to work in all types of weather.
  • Requires use of protective clothing or equipment, as authorized by WSMR Safety Office
  • This position has a requirement to lift up to 45 lbs. in the regular performance of duties

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Water/ Wastewater Systems Mechanic (Motor Vehicle Operator) ~ without more than normal supervision. Ability to collect samples of treated water and sewage, perform preventive inspections and maintenance on chemical feeders, chlorinators and other equipment, adjust rates of flow and amount of chemicals to be fed into the system; follow simple diagrams and drawings; maintain and repair water supply, distribution and treatment plant equipment and systems - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

This position has selective placement factors which must be met prior to employment and for continued employment.
Selective Placement Factors:
You must possess State of New Mexico Certifications as Water Systems Operator Level One (1) and Wastewater Systems Operator Level One (1).

  • PHYSICAL EFFORT: In the performance of duties, incumbent frequently works in limited space in cramped and uncomfortable positions. There is frequent climbing of stairways and ladders. The work also requires frequent handling of objects weighing 45 pounds and occasionally carrying objects weighing 45 pounds and over for considerable distances. The employee is required to push, pull, reach, walk, stand, crawl, kneel, bend, and work in cramped positions over and under machinery of all types for sustained periods of time.
  • WORKING CONDITIONS: Work may be performed outside on uneven surfaces and in all kinds of weather conditions. Inside work may be performed on floor or deck surfaces that are uneven, oily and slippery. There is exposure to rotating machinery, noise & vibration from machine, chemicals, oil/grease and gases/fumes. Incumbent is subject to cuts, abrasions and bruises from use of tools/equipment and burns from chemicals. Position requires the climbing and working from ladders, staging and overhead storage tanks at heights exceeding 100 feet with possible injury from slipping and falling. Utilization of safety equipment such as hard hats, face shields, gloves, hard-toe shoe, respirators and protective clothing is required. Position could result in mandatory 24 hour emergency call to include being on-call status during non-regularly scheduled hours that includes weekends and holidays.
