Duties

Help
  • These positions serve as a temporary seasonal Archeological Technician for the West Desert District.
  • Assists with on-the ground field studies.
  • Prepares descriptions of artifacts found.
  • Identify and package artifacts to be removed from the sites.
  • Prepares information such as reports, maps, and photographs.
  • Participates in cultural resource inventories to identify cultural, historic and/or paleontological resources.
  • Plans and carries out non-complex cultural resource field inventories.
  • Determines inventory methods to use, identifies areas to be inventoried and schedules inventory.
  • Compiles, summarizes, and interprets data obtained during inventories.

Qualifications

To qualify at the GS-05 level you must meet the following:

Specialized Experience: Applicants must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-04 level equivalent in difficulty and complexity to perform the duties of an Archeological Technician. Qualifying specialized experience includes: participating in cultural resource inventories; preparing archeological reports and/or record findings; and using a computer to enter, retrieve, and/or manipulate data.
OR Education: To qualify based on education you must have four (4) years (120 semester hours) of education above high school, leading to a bachelor's degree in a related field of study.
OR Combination of Education and Experience: You may meet qualifications requirement for this position with an equivalent combination of specialized experience and appropriate undergraduate education. Only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours of a course of study leading to a bachelor's degree is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirements. Two full academic years of study, or 60 semester hours, beyond the second year is equivalent one (1) year of specialized experience.

To qualify at the GS-06 level you must meet the following:

Specialized Experience: Applicants must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-05 level equivalent in difficulty and complexity to perform the duties of an Archeological Technician. Qualifying specialized experience includes: participating in cultural resource clearances and/or inventories, providing information on sites; preparing reports, maps, and/or photographs on inventories; and assembling data in a logical sequence for review by a professional cultural resource staff member.
OR Education: To qualify based on education you must have one (1) full year (18 semester hours) of graduate-level education in a related field of study.
OR Combination of Education and Experience: You may meet qualifications requirement for this position with an equivalent combination of specialized experience and appropriate graduate education. Graduate level education must demonstrate the difficulty and complexity to do the work of this position.

To qualify at the GS-07 level you must meet the following:

Specialized Experience: Applicants must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-06 level equivalent in difficulty and complexity to perform the duties of an Archeological Technician. Qualifying specialized experience includes: conducting cultural resource inventories documenting research results; monitoring cultural resources to report current and potential adverse impacts; compiling data on inventories and incorporating findings into reports for review by a professional cultural resource staff member; and assisting lower-graded employees or volunteers on projects or tasks.
OR Education: To qualify based on education you must have one (1) full year (18 semester hours) of graduate-level education in a related field of study.
OR Combination of Education and Experience: You may meet qualifications requirement for this position with an equivalent combination of specialized experience and appropriate graduate education. Graduate level education must demonstrate the difficulty and complexity to do the work of this position.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Physical Demands: Work requires some physical exertion such as bending and walking in terrain that is rough, rocky, mountainous and densely vegetated. Required to lift and carry equipment necessary to efficiently perform the work of the position, and to provide for personal comfort and safety. This can include tools, personal protective equipment, food and water for extended periods of work away from vehicles sometimes in remote locations.

Work Environment: Office work is performed in an adequately lighted, ventilated, cooled and heated area. During fieldwork is subject to cuts and bruises, extreme and adverse weather conditions, and injuries and discomforts from pests and animals. Employee will adhere to all safety rules and regulations.

Education

Applicants may qualify for these positions based on experience, education, or an equivalent combination as described in the Qualifications section of this announcement.

Graduate education or an internship meets the specialized experience required above GS-5 only in those instances where it is directly related to the work of the position. One full year of graduate education meets the requirements for GS-7.
