Duties

Help
  • Update historical indices in Access database, update old/create new plats in Autocad, support and monitor current contracts for records improvement, prepares products for final review and publication.
  • Adapts and modifies standard practice to meet unique project requirements while adhering to national standards and BLM Manual 1275.
  • The work involves compilation of raw source data from many incompatible sources, adjustment for scale and projection, integration with other themes to maintain referential integrity, and interpolation and correlation of data.
  • Interpret interrelationships among various physical features based on knowledge of historic and current public land and mineral laws and appropriate attribution of land tenure parcels.
  • The reconciliation of data and/or variable accuracy is a major function of this position.

Qualifications

In order to be rated as qualified for this position, we must be able to determine that you meet the qualification requirements - please be sure to include this information in your resume. No assumptions will be made about your experience.

To qualify for the GS-07 you must have: One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-06 in the federal service, OR one full year (18 semester hours) of graduate level education leading to a Master's degree in a directly related field, OR an equivalent combination of experience and education. Specialized experience for the GS-07 level is defined as working knowledge of windows-based computer operating systems in order to perform routine file management, good organizational skills. Familiarity with computer aided drafting software and Microsoft databases extremely helpful

To qualify for the GS-08 you must have: One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-07 in the federal service, OR two full years (36 semester hours) of graduate level education leading to a Master's degree in a directly related field, OR an equivalent combination of experience and education. Specialized experience for the GS-08 level is defined as an understanding of surveys, must be able to read and interpret land descriptions, must have a working knowledge of AutoCad, Microsoft Word, and ArcPRO or other related GIS products.

To qualify for the GS-09 you must have: One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-08 in the federal service, OR two full years (36 semester hours) of graduate level education leading to a Master's degree in a directly related field, OR an equivalent combination of experience and education. Specialized experience for the GS-09 level is defined as a full range of cartographic principles and concepts applicable to technical duties concerned with topographic, orthophoto, hydrographic, geographic information systems, land use, land cover, and digital maps. The understanding of land and mineral case records and the documentation required to complete those actions

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

You must meet all qualification requirements by the closing date of the announcement.

Physical Demands: The work is mostly sedentary; however, some lifting, bending, and carrying are required to move and service equipment, handle source materials and supplies, and to arrange office space. The work requires a marked degree of hand-eye coordination, dexterity, and concentration and involves regular and recurring periods of prolonged sitting at drafting light tables, digitizing tablets, and computer workstations.

Work Environment: The work is performed in an office or similar setting requiring normal safety precautions against everyday risks or discomforts. The job may require some field work where there may be exposure to rain, heat, and cold. In this environment, prescribed safety precautions should be taken.

Above duties are for the GS-07 level. At the higher-grade levels, less assistance, instruction, guidance, oversight, review, and supervision will be provided.

Education

Applicants may qualify for this position based on experience, Graduate level education, or a combination of experience and education.

PLEASE NOTE: Graduate education meets the specialized experience required above GS-5 only in those instances where it is directly related to the work of the position. One year of full-time graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent 1 year of full-time study. If that information cannot be obtained from the school, 18 semester hours should be considered as satisfying the 1 year of full-time study requirement. Part-time graduate education is creditable in accordance with its relationship to a year of full-time study at the school attended.
