The Internship Program is for current students and individuals accepted for enrollment in a qualifying educational program. The Internship Program provides students enrolled in a variety of educational institutions with paid opportunities to work in agencies and explore Federal careers while still in school.

Employee will be responsible for collecting a broad range of routine and emergency blood samples on human patients. Major duties include, but may not be limited to the following:

  • Understands and follows universal precaution protocols.
  • Performs venipuncture procedures, following a sequence of the best venipuncture site, most suitable needle type, size and appropriate cleansing agents(s), proper collection vials, and assesses patient condition before and after procedure.
  • Performs proper patient identification, sample procurement, and specimen labeling.
  • Identifies patients with two identifiers to assure the accuracy of the specimen collected and documents collection appropriately.
  • Follows laboratory procedures for collecting specimens in appropriate container, maintains specimen under appropriate conditions, follows guidelines for collecting timed specimens, etc.
  • Evaluates suitability of specimens for analysis, requesting new specimens if determined to be unusable.
  • Understands and follows the proper order of draw for tubes whether in a vacutainer system or a syringe system.
  • Provides education to patients for proper collection techniques of urine, stool, or other fluid collections.
  • Maintains appropriate levels of supplies on blood drawing trays and in blood drawing area and supplies for blood culture collection.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
WORK SCHEDULE: These are a part-time positions, 8 hours/week, schedule negotiable and includes working days, evenings, nights, and weekends as needed to support high workload times, late clinic hours, and short staff coverage. The salary listed represents full-time employment and will be pro-rated based on the actual number of hours worked each pay-period. Likewise, benefits and time-off accrual will also be prorated and based on your part-time work schedule.

DESIGNATED DRUG-TESTING POSITION: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA. Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test result is received.

Qualifications

Applicant(s) must meet the education qualification standards for this Student Trainee - Medical/Health position at the GS-3 grade level.

EDUCATION: Successfully completed one full year of post-high school academic study. (Transcript is required at the time of application to receive credit. Transcript must clearly show an academic year of education defined as 30 semester hours, 45 quarter hours, or the equivalent in an accredited college or university. Note: Copies of diploma, certificate, or certified phlebotomist certification, etc. are not sufficient to verify education.)

In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), No person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. You must be proficient in basic written and spoken English in order to meet the requirements of this position.

IMPORTANT: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORKING CONDITIONS: The work requires some walking, light lifting, and intermittent periods of standing; and requires manual dexterity and color vision.

Work is performed in a clinical laboratory setting, situated in a hospital environment. Most specimens are from diseased patients and considered biohazardous of which biohazard precautions must be followed. Use of toxic or caustic chemicals during procedures may be required. Personal protective equipment must be used and mandated safety regulations followed as appropriate for the procedure or activity. Access to Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) will be provided. Accidents or potential safety hazards must be reported to supervisors for investigation and follow through.
