Duties

Help
  • Utilize next generation (NGS) high-throughput automated DNA sequencing technologies.
  • Direct a team that maintains a highly efficient and state-of-the-art sequencing production unit.
  • Evaluate and coordinate the implementation of new sequencing methods and technologies.
  • Ensure that the necessary supplies and equipment are procured to maintain laboratory, and that equipment is in proper working order.
  • Train technicians properly in relevant techniques and that ensures they employ all protocols, taking corrective action where necessary.
  • Devise strategies for resolving scientific problems related to limited-input DNA/RNA quantities, DNA purification and sequencing.

Qualifications

In order to qualify for a Biologist, GS-0401 position, you must have:

A. Completed the requirements of a bachelor's (or graduate) degree in a biological science, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to this position, from an accredited college or university;

OR

B. a combination of experience and education which includes courses comparable to a major in a biological science, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry or related disciplines appropriate to this position, AND appropriate experience or additional education which demonstrates similarly appropriate skills or abilities needed to perform the duties of this position.

In addition to the education requirements, to qualify at the GS-14 level, you must demonstrate in your resume at least 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-13 level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following tasks: 1) Managing day-to-day operation of a production sequencing group, including coordinating activities of laboratory research projects 2)Utilizing sequencing projects and technologies; 3) Evaluating and coordinating implementation of sequencing methods and technologies; 4) Reviewing raw and processed data for quality control; and 5) Communicating technical knowledge of sequencing platforms and applications to researchers.
