Duties

Help

As a Toolmaker, you will:

  • Fabricate jigs, fixtures, and special tooling, and construct metal blanking dies. You will maintain carbide and tool steel dies for domestic and foreign coinage and medal dies-by repairing and regrinding.
  • Set up and operate a variety of machine tools working to very close tolerances (i.e., turret and engine lathes, milling machines, surface grinders, external and internal cylindrical grinders, planners, shapers, drill presses, jig boring machines, horizontal boring machines, jig grinder, radial and bench drill presses and other related shop equipment.)
  • Plan and lay out work according to blueprints, sketches, specifications, or samples to exact and very close tolerances (0.0001).
  • Diagnose, dismantle and correct problems with machinery by making necessary repairs to return equipment to proper working order.

  • Shift Work: This facility operates on a 24 hour per day, three-shift basis. Assignment to a specific shift cannot be guaranteed. The successful applicant must be able to work all shifts on a rotational basis.
  • May be required to wear safety clothing and/or equipment required by the position. This may include safety shoes, hard hats, hearing protection, gloves, masks, etc.
  • Pass a pre-employment physical examination.

PHYSICAL EFFORT
Position involves standing, stooping, bending and reaching. Handles dies weighing approximately 200 pounds with hoists. Works in cramped quarters while repairing or studying problems of tools and dies. Subject to considerable eye strain due to extensive use of delicate instruments and magnifying glasses and the closeness of the work.
