Help

As a Supervisory Fish Biologist (Deepwater Sciences Branch Chief) within the Great Lakes Science Center, some of your specific duties will include:

  • Directs and supervises the Station Chiefs of the Lake Superior (Ashland, WI), Lake Erie (Huron, OH), and Lake Ontario (Oswego, NY) Biological Stations; the Supervisor of the Lake Michigan, and Lake Huron Sections (Ann Arbor, MI); and the Station Chief of the Hammond Bay Biological Station (Millersburg, MI) staff in planning and assigning work priorities; develops performance standards, and reviews, evaluates, and rates subordinate performance; provides oversight and instructs as to U. S. Geological Survey (USGS) and Center policy on matters of employee conduct, administration, and safety; identifies training needs and develops training plans for subordinates.
  • Approves research proposals; Provides science quality and policy reviews of reports and manuscripts written by staff members who report directly to the Deepwater Science Branch Chief.
  • Represent the Center at international meetings and other gatherings of federal, state, tribal, and academic partners. Prepares routine reports of progress and accomplishments for inclusion in Center and USGS;
  • Works closely with the Great Lakes Fishery Commission (GLFC) Council of Lake Committee's (CLC) designee on annual reports and Memoranda of Agreement or Understanding and provides Center Director with responses to requests for information from congressional and USGS staff. Provides technical assistance in solicited reviews of documents from a variety of scientific journals and professional societies (e.g., The American Fisheries Society)
  • Reviewing and approving manuscripts for peer-reviewed journals as appropriate. Guides development and review of study plans; and ensures a well-balanced science portfolio within the station with a thoughtful and strategic, well-aligned complement of high priority reimbursable science projects.

Are There Any Special Requirements For This Position?
  • Supervisory Probationary Period - This position requires completion of a one year supervisory/managerial probationary period, if one has not previously been completed.
  • Driver's License/Driving Record - You will be required to operate a government-owned or -leased vehicle in the performance of your official duties. Applicants for this position must meet the following requirements:(1) possess a valid State license, and (2) possess a safe driving record. If selected, you will be required to provide proof of a valid State license & a copy of your driving record.
  • Because this position requires travel for official business, the selectee will be required to apply for a charge card within 30 calendar days of appointment. Individuals who have delinquent account balances from a previous Government charge card will be required to satisfy their existing obligation before a new card can be issued.

Qualifications

BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT: Applicants must meet A or B below to satisfy the basic requirement for Fishery Biologist, all grade levels. A. Degree: major in biological science that included: at least 6 semester hours or the equivalent in aquatic subjects such as limnology, ichthyology, fishery biology, aquatic botany, aquatic fauna, oceanography, fish culture, or related courses in the field of fishery biology; and at least 12 semester hours or the equivalent in the animal sciences in such subjects as general zoology, vertebrate zoology, comparative anatomy, physiology, entomology, parasitology, ecology, cellular biology, genetics, or research in these fields. (Excess course work in aquatic subjects may be used to meet this requirement when appropriate).

B. Combination of education and experience-courses equivalent to a major in biological science (i.e. at least 30 semester hours or the equivalent), of which a minimum of 6 semester hours or the equivalent were in aquatic subjects and 12 semester hours or the equivalent were in the animal sciences, as shown in "A" above, plus appropriate experience and/or additional education for a total of 4 years. The education or combined education and experience must be comparable in type, scope, and thoroughness to that acquired through successful completion of a 4-year course of study as described in "A" above.

For GS-14:

In addition to the basic education requirement as stated above, applicants must have one year of appropriate professional experience in fishery biology that is equivalent to at least the GS-13 level in the Federal service.

Examples of GS-13 level work may include: 1) Providing technical leadership, staff level coordination or consultation for a major fishery program; resolving problems that are resistant to established practices; 2) Serving as an expert agency consultant with international, national, and State officials; 3) Conducting field investigations based on newly identified fishery program areas; planning/executing assignments, selecting appropriate techniques, determining project scope/approach.
