Help

The CRRC Senior Social Worker is responsible to provide a variety of services to Veterans experiencing homelessness, who are unstably housed and/or at imminent risk of homelessness. The CRRC Senior Social Worker completes psychosocial assessments, suicide risk assessments and suicide safety plans, treatment planning, short-term solution focused counseling with individuals and families who may be in crisis, education and referral for resources and benefits, case management and may provide post-intervention follow-up.

Major duties include, but not limited to:

  • Interviews Clients and Conducts Psychosocial Assessments Interviews Veterans to establish facts about the Veteran's situation, presenting Interviews Veterans to establish facts about the Veteran's situation.
  • Makes Psychosocial Diagnoses Independently evaluates the Veteran's situation, including the Veteran's reaction and ability to deal with it, and arrives at a reasoned conclusion.
  • Plans Effective Treatment Assures the transfer of health care, both inpatient and outpatient, to the appropriate VHA and community resources.
  • Implements Treatment Provides individual and group counseling services, including psychotherapy in some settings.
  • Assists and encourages Veterans and significant others in facing problems, thinking them through, evaluating the situation realistically, considering alternative courses of action, and arriving at plans for using resources to resolve problems.
  • Evaluation, Education, Supervision, Coaching, and Mentoring . Documents independently in the medical records utilizing paper and/or electronic formats, including psychosocial assessments, diagnostics, treatment, progress notes, clinical orders, follow up, and referral.
  • The incumbent coordinates Social Work services with other services offered in the treatment program assuring such services are complementary and comprehensive.
  • The incumbent provides clinical supervision to lesser experienced social worker staff members Is viewed by Social Workers and interdisciplinary team members as a senior clinician with advanced practice skills and expertise.
  • The incumbent provides training to students, residents, interns, and fellows from other disciplines. Instructs them on psychosocial treatment and on the services available for Social Workers.
  • The incumbent is required to conduct active outreach, including street outreach, to Veterans involved with the medical center and local community. The CRRC Sr. Social Worker may be required to assist during the Mobile Medical Unit (MMU) deployments in the community.
  • The incumbent is required to conduct active outreach, including street outreach, to Veterans involved with the medical center and local community. This outreach may also include interviews, assessments and referrals for Veterans contacted in community settings.
  • The incumbent functions as an ongoing case manager by performing duties to facilitate independent community living by coordinating mental health and community care, as appropriate.
  • The incumbent will address Advance Directives and Organ Donation in accordance with the standards of their work area.
  • Incumbent follows applicable program guidelines and procedures, both locally and nationally. The incumbent actively participates in the program conference calls and attends program trainings and meetings.
  • The incumbent takes responsibility for improving professional skills, participating in planning and executing specific staff development projects, attending seminars and institutes, and participating in training programs of other disciplines as requested.
  • The incumbent will coordinate treatment and communicate with the care lines to facilitate continuity of care for Veterans.
  • The in cumbent travels where necessary, or as assigned in the capacity of community outreach support. The incumbent will maintain a current, unrestricted driver's license. Acts as a liaison between VA and community resources, to include marketing and public relations duties as needed.
  • The incumbent has advanced level of knowledge and understanding of the services and benefits available from community, State and Federal agencies.
  • The incumbent will performs other related duties as assigned.

Basic Requirements:

  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • English Language Proficiency. In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), no person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English.
  • Master's degree in Social Work from a school of social work fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). Graduates of schools of social work that are in candidacy status do not meet this requirement until the school of social work is fully accredited. Note: A doctoral degree in Social Work may NOT be substituted for the master's degree in Social Work. Verification of the degree can be made by going to http://www.cswe.org/Accreditation to verify that the social work degree meets the accreditation standards for a masters of social work.
  • Licensed or certified by a state to independently practice social work at the advanced practice level which included an advanced generalist or clinical examination, unless they are grandfathered by the state in which they are licensed to practice at the advanced practice level (except for licenses issued in California, which administers its own clinical examination for advanced practice) and they must be able to provide supervision for licensure. NOTE: A COPY OF YOUR LICENSE/CERTIFICATION IS REQUIRED

Grade Determinations: Senior Social Worker, GS-12

Licensure:
Senior social workers must be licensed or certified by a state at the advanced practice level which included an advanced generalist or clinical examination, unless they are grandfathered by the state in which they are licensed to practice at the advanced practice level (except for licenses issued in California, which administers its own clinical examination for advanced practice) and must be able to provide supervision for licensure.

Association of Social Work Boards: Must complete and pass the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) advanced generalist or clinical examination unless advanced practice license was grandfathered by the state in which I am licensed to practice at the advanced practice level (i.e., granted prior to the state administering the ASWB) or took the state of California (CA) exam and have a CA advanced practice license.

Experience/ Education: Must possess at least two years of experience post advanced practice clinical licensure of which, one year must be equivalent to the GS-11 grade level. Examples of specialized experience include, but are not limited to: assessing and documenting identified behaviors or symptoms of abuse, neglect, exploitation and/or intimate partner violence; use of clinical social work skills; maintaining patient privacy and confidentiality per policies, handbooks or directives; acting as an advocate with appropriate community service providers and agencies when it serves the best interest of the patient and family members/caregiver; independently assessing the psychosocial functioning and needs of patients and their family members, identifying the patient's strengths, weaknesses, coping skills, and psychosocial acuity. Applicable experience must demonstrate possession of advanced practice skills and judgment. Senior social workers are experts in their specialized area of practice. Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities. In addition to the experience above, candidates must demonstrate all of the following KSAs:
  • Skill in a range of specialized interventions and treatment modalities used in specialty treatment programs or with special patient populations. This includes individual, group, and/or family counseling or psychotherapy and advanced level psychosocial and/or case management.
  • Ability to incorporate complex multiple causation in differential diagnosis and treatment within approved clinical privileges or scope of practice.
  • Knowledge in developing and implementing methods for measuring effectiveness of social work practice and services in the specialty area, utilizing outcome evaluations to improve treatment services and to design system changes.
  • Ability to provide specialized consultation to colleagues and students on the psychosocial treatment of patients in the service delivery area, as well as role modeling effective social work practice skills.
  • Ability to expand clinical knowledge in the social work profession, and to write policies, procedures, and/or practice guidelines pertaining to the service delivery area.

Consistently communicates and treats customers (patients, visitors, volunteers, and all medical center staff) in a courteous, tactful, and respectful manner. Handles conflict and problems in dealing with the customer constructively and appropriately. Responds to voicemails and emails within 24 hours.

The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-12.

Physical Requirements: Physically being able to lift and carry objects up to 15 pounds. Conducting street outreach in the community in extreme heat of Southern Nevada. Walking a moderate to high distance to obtain GSA Vehicle and to make contact with Veterans for face-to-face visits as part of outreach efforts. Ability to climb and descend several flights of stairs and to maintain an individual level of "self­ preservation" in the community.

Must be able to work in extreme weather conditions, including extreme heat or cold during street outreach and during Point-In-Time counts in the community.

Receiving Service Credit or Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee.
