Duties

Help

The principal workload responsibility of this position is inspection, maintenance, repair, servicing, modification, adjustment, and calibration of the following electrical and mechanical systems associated with assigned aids to air navigation: (1)engine-driven standby power generation equipment, (2)electrical systems, (3)air-conditioning, heating, and ventilation systems, and (4) communications and control cables; and all other physical plant and structures workload such as: (1) antenna towers and poles, (2)buildings and structures, (3)roads and grounds, and (4) utilities (sewerage and water).

Typical duties include:

Working from building plans, blueprints, wiring diagrams, engineering drawings, and electrical maintenance and repair manuals to plan and lay out the routing, placement type, size, gauge, balance, load, continuity, and safe operation of electrical lines, circuits, systems, equipment and controls. Determines and places distribution panels, boxes, fittings, and connections and install wiring, couplings, conduit, relays, fixtures, transformers and other electrical devices including electrical service entrances.

Installing and repairing systems used to condition the air for different kinds of structures such as warehouses, ships, hangars, hospitals, submarines, and large office buildings and complexes, including those with areas that have special requirements such as communication centers, electronic data processing centers, operating rooms, laboratories, clean rooms, and other areas with sensitive equipment. Systems use a variety of methods of air conditioning such as mechanical compression, vapor compression, absorption, and steam jet or air cycle.

Sets up and operates a wide variety of wood working machines and tools. Assemble items with a variety of joining techniques such as miters, rabbets, dados, biscuit, and mortise and tenon, and use glues and adhesives to secure wood pieces, veneers, and counter tops. Use wood, metal and various composite materials when installing or repairing interior partitions, flooring, panels, suspended ceilings, counter tops, and moldings. Interprets drawings, blueprints, and specifications independently, and determines the layout and work sequences and types of lumber or special related materials. Plans and carries out projects from initial layout to completion. Responsible for accuracy, spacing, fit, and structural soundness and finished appearance, which are essential.

The supervisor checks overall work to see that it meets accepted standards and is completed in a timely manner. Incumbent may be required to do a moderate amount of travel.

Qualifications

To qualify, no specific length of experience or training is required; however, you must show evidence of experience and/or training of sufficient scope and quality that demonstrates your ability to perform the duties of a journey person Maintenance Mechanic in your resume. This position requires knowledge, skill and abilities in various trades of work such as mechanical, electrical, carpentry, plumbing, welding/metal fabrication, painting and general knowledge of electronics and equipment.

Security Requirements:Moderate Risk (5): This position requires completion and favorable adjudication of a National Agency Check with Inquiry (NACI) background investigation prior to appointment, unless a waiver is obtained.

Physical Effort: Considerable lifting of heavy materials and working tools and extensive standing, bending, lifting, pushing and pulling are inherent in this position. Also, incumbent will be working under variable conditions which require using protective clothing and gear, safety devices and safe trade practices. Incumbent must be physically able to wear OSHA standard personal protective equipment (PPE) per 29 CFR.

Working Conditions: Incumbent works inside and outside during all kinds of weather conditions including varying temperatures.
