Summary

This position is in the Reserve Fleets, Office of Ship Operations, Office of the Deputy Associate Administrator for Federal Sealift, Office of the Associate Administrator for Strategic Sealift, Maritime Administration (MARAD). The incumbent will work with a crew of mechanics, riggers, and laborers assigned in two major programs aboard vessels in the National Defense Reserve Fleet (NDRF): deck and hull coating maintenance; and implementation of the Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plan (SWPPP).

Duties

Help

The Preservation Servicer:

  • Regularly inspects shipboard coatings and failed coating remediation involving scaling, scraping, and chipping.
  • Performs vessel maintenance through topside housekeeping on non-retention vessels including sweeping and trash removal.
  • Provides deck maintenance and repair, including of exterior surfaces, and surface preparation and recoating of failed areas aboard retention vessels and Fleet service craft.
  • Assists other Fleet production tasks, such as ship arrivals, departures, and mooring as needed.

The ideal candidate has the ability and willingness to learn how to perform general housekeeping.

Given our continuing need for professionals in this field, we will routinely review applications and refer the top candidates for potential interviews multiple times during the open period of the announcement. CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

  • SELECTIVE SERVICE: Males born after 12/31/1959 must be registered for the Selective Service.

  • DRUG TESTING: Tentatively selected candidates are required to undergo urinalysis in accordance with DOT 3910.1D entitled "Drug and Alcohol-Free Departmental Workplace", which includes testing for marijuana. Marijuana is legal in some states, however it’s still illegal at the federal level. Therefore, if selected for the position you will be required to submit to a pre-employment/pre-appointment drug test, you will also be subject to Random Drug Testing.
  • PHYSICAL EFFORT: Potentially hazardous assignments are required. The work requires heavy exertion and is arduous at times, requiring excessive walking, climbing vertical ladders, kneeling, crouching, stooping, working in awkward positions on steel decks and in close quarters, frequent lifting of 50 pounds and infrequent lifting of over 50 pounds with assistance.
  • WORKING CONDITIONS: The employee works outside in all kinds of extreme weather, e.g., heat, cold, precipitation, wind, etc. The equipment, tools, and tasks involve extreme care and use of protective clothing, safety gloves, ear plugs, safety glasses, or respirators to avoid severe injuries. The employee is subject to slippery surfaces, insufficient light and air, soot, dirt, dust, fumes and extremes of heat and cold. May work in cramped, smelly places and in spaces where asbestos and lead-based paint is present; danger to falling overboard or shock from electrical equipment; exposed to tripping hazards and subject to cuts and burns.
  • DEU REQUIREMENTS: Applicants selected under delegated examining procedures may be required to successfully complete a one-year probationary period (unless already completed).

Qualifications

Qualifications for the position are based on the education, training, experience, or other requirements that determine which applicants would be able to perform satisfactorily in the position to be filled.

To qualify for the WG-07 Preservation Servicer, you must have experience and/or training of sufficient scope and quality to perform the duties without more than normal supervision.

You must have: 

  • The ability to learn how to perform general housekeeping.
  • The ability to learn how to apply paint coatings on vessels.

  • Knowledge of materials.
