Help
  • Perform the most complex ecological projects or studies.
  • Develop the design and implementation of ecological models that contribute to land management planning
  • Monitor and evaluate the effects of management decisions on Forest land and surrounding communities.
  • Work with other program area managers to formulate and recommend policies, programs and plans for ecosystem management
  • Review technical documents for errors and completeness, thoroughness, and ensure that completed work provides all required elements.
  • Participate as a reviewer or technical contact on interdisciplinary teams to develop ecology considerations in environmental planning documents.
  • Evaluate the effects of resource management decisions to determine the capabilities of lands to meet present to future demands.

Qualifications

Basic Educational Requirement:
GS-0408 Series (Ecology):
Degree: Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree that included a major field of study in biology, or a related field of science underlying ecological research that included at least 30 semester hours in basic and applied biological sciences. These hours must have included at least 9 semester hours in ecology, and 12 semester hours in physical and mathematical sciences.

In addition to meeting the basic educational requirement listed above, you must also possess professional type specialized experience in the amounts listed below.

Specialized Experience Requirement:
For the GS-13 level: One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-12 grade level in the Federal service or equivalent private sector experience. Specialized Experience is defined as meeting at least 2 more of the following:

  • Developed and adapted concepts of ecosystem analysis and management to derive and apply techniques applicable for planning land allocation and projects;
  • Performed a wide variety of sampling using comprehensive assessment techniques to interpret applicable or relevant and appropriate requirements;
  • Prepared wide-ranging environmental assessments and impact statements and making recommendations to ensure that natural resources and ecosystem integrity were adequately addressed and considered;
  • Conducted NEPA analysis as part of an interdisciplinary team;
  • Provided guidance in active management of wildlife habitats based on monitoring results.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

TIME IN GRADE REQUIREMENT: If you are a current federal employee in the General Schedule (GS) pay plan and applying for a promotion opportunity, you must meet time-in-grade (TIG) requirements of 52 weeks of service at the next lower grade level in the normal line of progression for the position being filled. This requirement must be met by the closing date of this announcement.
