Duties

Help
  • Serves as an Installation Geographic Information Systems (GIS) specialist for the Directorate of Public Works (DPW) Master Planning Division.
  • Plans and carries out analytical and interpretive assignments of military and civil works programs and projects which includes areas of installation operations, emergency services, flight safety and impacts, and environmental and cultural compliance.
  • Gathers geographic data to research through field observations, maps, photographs, satellite imagery, photogrammetry, aerial photography, digital imagery, cartography, image processing, and geodesy.
  • Develops organizational policies, standard operating procedures for data integrity, compliance with spatial data standards, the Spatial Data Standard for Facilities, Infrastructure and Environment (SDSFIE) and other relevant standards.
  • Develops GIS modeling, workflows and routines in the form of computer-generated scripts.
  • Develops and evaluates digital data and mapping (raster and vector) products in the areas of remote sensing, photogrammetry, hydrographic surveying, topography and land surveying.
  • Coordinates responses on data calls and annual reporting of Geospatial data to higher headquarters, Installation Management Command (IMCOM), Army Materials Command (AMC) and Department of the Army (DA).

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Appointment to this position is subject to a one-year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315. While probationary the incumbent can be terminated with limited appeal rights.
  • This is a Term position scheduled to last 30 SEP 2029. A term position may be extended to a maximum of six years depending upon the needs of management.
  • Term employment is subject to a one-year trial period. Employees serving a trial period can be removed with limited appeal rights.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Basic Requirement for: Geographer (Geographic Information Systems) 0150 Series

A. Degree: Bachelor's degree (or higher degree) in geography; or related physical or social science such as geology, meteorology, economics, statistics, sociology, anthropology, political science, history, cartography, computer science, urban studies, or planning that included at least 24 semester hours in geography or related fields.

OR

B. Combination of Education and Experience: Courses equivalent to a major in geography, or a related field that included at least 24 semester hours in geography or related fields, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes:
1) Developing digital spatial data or mapping products in remote sensing, photogrammetry, hydrographic surveying, topography or land surveying; AND
2) Utilizing geospatial technology including Geospatial Information Systems (GIS) to manage geospatial data and create cartographic products; AND
3) Analyzing a variety of cartographic products to formulate analysis and develop recommendations.

This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-11).

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.

  • Telework may be authorized IAW agency policy. Telework is 2 days per week or 4 days per pay period.
