Duties

Help
  • Drive firefighting vehicles to the emergency site.
  • Serve as operator of fire fighting vehicles e.g., pumpers, crash/rescue trucks, hazardous material response vehicles, mobile water supplier, aircraft rescue fire fighting vehicles/support vehicles under types of conditions.
  • Perform inspections where nature of hazard and potential severity of fires is of moderate to a high degree.
  • Perform fire prevention inspections of structures, facilities, airfields and areas of the installation.
  • Unreel/connect hose, lays hose lines, operates charged lines, places/raises ladders, operates portable/stationary firefighting apparatus, ventilates buildings/aircraft and other firefighting equipment to extinguish fire and protect life/property.
  • Alternate as hose person, ladder person, hydrant person, rescue person, nozzle person, salvage person, or hand lineperson.
  • Use chemical agents, axes, bars, hooks, gas masks and other firefighting equipment to extinguish fire and protect life and property.
  • Respond to alarms, combats fire and hazardous situations requiring the full performance of firefighting tasks.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position requires the completion of pre-employment and periodic subsequent medical examination in accordance with DoDM 6055.06 to ensure continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
  • This position has a requirement to lift up to 50 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.
  • The duties of this position meet the criteria for compliance with Federal and Department of the Army Drug Free Workplace Programs. Detection of the presence of drugs is warranted.
  • This position is subject to a pre-employment screening, and random testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
  • This position requires the incumbent to wear the prescribed uniform and/or personal protective equipment while on duty.
  • This position requires shift work to provide coverage on evenings, weekends, holidays, or special situations. Employee shifts are rotated on a regularly scheduled basis; 48-hour rotating shifts with a work schedule of 144 hours per pay period.
  • The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles.
  • This position requires successful completion of an annual Job Performance Test.
  • This position requires participation in a cardiovascular physical fitness program.
  • Within the first year of occupying the position, incumbent must obtain and then continue to maintain National Wildfire Coordinating Group (NWCG) Wildland Firefighter Type II Red Card Certification.
  • This position reuires a Secret Security Clearance.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. GS-06 Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes controlling or extinguishing fires as a member of an organized military, industrial, volunteer, or governmental fire department; controlling hazardous material incidents; operation of fire communications equipment; and performing emergency medical treatment. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-05)

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this level you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone - no substitution of education for experience is permitted.

GS-07 Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes controlling and extinguishing fires; developing, implementing, or providing training in fire protection and prevention; operation of fire communications equipment; experience operating emergency vehicles under adverse weather and/or traffic conditions; and experience performing patient examination and providing prompt and efficient patient care. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06).

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this level you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone - no substitution of education for experience is permitted.

In addition to meeting the specialized experience requirement above, applicants must also possess the certifications for the appropriate level you are applying listed and in the Required Documents sections below in accordance with DoD 6055.06-M.

GS-06 Certificates: Applicants must have the following DoD Fire and Emergency Services Certification System (DoD F&ES), International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC), or the Fire Service Professional Qualifications System (PRO-Board) certifications at the time of application: Firefighter I, Firefighter II, Airport Firefighter, HAZMAT Awareness, HAZMAT Operations, Driver Operator Pumper, Drive Operator Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting AND a State or National Registry Emergency Medical Technician - Basic.

GS-07 Certificates: Applicants must have the following DoD, IFSAC or Pro Board professional certifications at the time of application: Firefighter II, Airport Firefighter, HazMat Technician, Driver Operator Pumper, Driver Operator Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting, Driver Operator Mobile Water Supply, Driver Operator Aerial AND a State or National Registry Emergency Medical Technician - Basic.

Proof of Age: As this is primary/rigorous firefighter position, your application package MUST include a government issued document indicating your date of birth. Failure to submit this document will result in your application being marked as Incomplete and you WILL NOT receive further consideration for this position.

Maximum Entry Age (MEA): The MEA for Firefighters is 37. Applicants not appointed by the last day of the month in which that individual reaches their 37th birthday shall not be appointed or assigned to these positions.

Maximum Re-entry Age: An employee who previously served on a covered position may be rehired past the MEA as long as he/she is able to complete 20 years of covered service by his/her mandatory retirement age. The maximum re-entry age for the individual is calculated by determining the total amount of time he/she has served on a covered position and subtracting that from age 57, if a firefighter. The employee's current age is compared to the calculated maximum re-entry age to determine if he/she can be rehired into the covered position.
