About the Position: This position is established to serve as a Maintenance Mechanic to perform journey level repair duties in a variety of trades and crafts areas to primarily include heating, ventilation, and air conditioning, electrical, and plumbing. This employee may work alone or as a member of a team providing work direction to lower graded employees when required.

Duties

Help
  • Troubleshoot problems, determine repairs, plan sequences of work, and make the necessary repairs.
  • Work from blueprints and drawings in order to determine where new electrical systems are to be installed.
  • Determine such factors as load, demand, wire size, breaker size, and other such factors in order to provide proper balance in the new or existing system.
  • Install, modify, and repair new and existing utility, supply, and disposal systems and equipment.
  • Repair small to large commercial and industrial heating units such oil/gas fired furnaces and hot water or steam boilers.

  • Employee must obtain and maintain a valid state driver's license and any installation and/or DOD requirements for the type vehicle being operated.
  • Position is weather essential. Employee may be required to report to work during periods of inclement weather.
  • The employee must pass physical examinations as required by Federal and Office of Safety and Occupational Health Administration guides.
  • This position is subject to rotating shifts, weekend and or holiday work schedules.
  • Employee may be required to lift up to 45 pounds without assistance. Assistance is required when lifting over 45 pounds.
  • The employee must possess and maintain a Universal (types I, II and III) Freon handling certification as required by 40 CFR Part 82, subpart F.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of an Maintenance Mechanic without more than normal supervision. Without more than normal supervision. I am able to perform the most difficult and complex Maintenance Mechanic tasks independently including: planning, laying out, installation and repair of large commercial and industrial air conditioning and heating systems, hot water heaters, gas and oil-fueled boilers, and chillers; application of the National Electrical Code and local codes while planning, laying out, installing, and repairing all facets of industrial multiphase electrical systems; planning, laying out, installation and repair of new and existing utility, supply, and disposal systems; repairing, constructing, and maintaining a variety of wooden structures requiring close tolerance fit and structural soundness; and working on large projects with complex issues and extensive repairs requiring difficult judgments. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

  • PHYSICAL EFFORT: Employee works in shops and at job sites. Strenuous physical exertion is often required. Employee may lift and move materials up to 45 pounds, unassisted, and occasionally lifts or moves heavier items with the assistance of lifting devices or other workers. Employee is required to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb, and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions for extended periods of time. Employee may work from ladders, scaffolding, and roofs performing the duties of this position.
  • WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is performed both inside and outside. Employee is exposed to moderate or high noise levels, sawdust, glue fumes, and hazards associated with woodworking and related power equipment when performing work in the shop area. Work at job sites exposes employee to adverse weather conditions and the hazards of working on and around scaffolds and ladders. Employee is subject to cuts, bruises and contusions, electrical shock, cuts, and burns. May be required to work in confined areas such as crawl spaces and attics, which may be dusty and dirty. Protective devices such as, but not limited to, ear plugs, safety glasses, respirators, gloves, and safety shoes may be required. Protective equipment and clothing may be hot and uncomfortable and may be worn for long periods of time.
