Major Duties:

The primary purpose of the position is to interview patients and complete basic health screening.

  • Collects patient data including vital signs, pain level, weight, height, and observation of overall condition.
  • Obtains vital signs, chief complaint(s) and/or patient history following OPC guidelines. Reports abnormal and/or significant data to physician.
  • Prepares patients for examinations and procedures by instructing/assisting in disrobing, gowning, and draping and assists physicians with examinations and procedures, including assistance with instruments, dressings, and consent forms.
  • Performs visual acuity tests and EKGs.
  • Assists patients in out-processing; assists patients in dressing, exiting examination rooms if necessary; reviews physician orders and assures completion of these; instructs patients regarding laboratory, radiological or other diagnostic tests; and instructs patients regarding call back, return appointments, consultations, assesses patient understanding of instruction.
  • Receives and reviews each day all incoming information: diagnostic testing results such as laboratory, radiology, other diagnostic tests and procedures; consult reports/recommendations; medical summaries including hospital discharge summaries; other patient related information.
  • Opens physician mail pertaining to clinical information; accounts for results returned on tracking sheets; presents all incoming clinical information to physician for review in a timely manner, emphasizing when abnormalities are present, assures physician acknowledgement of results reviewed; assures that results are appropriately filed in patients' medical records.
  • Arranges for medical record to be reviewed by physician together with incoming clinical information.
  • Recognizes the need for, and assists with emergency measures, including CPR. Takes appropriate action in response to patient emergency situations.
  • Receives encounter forms and assures completeness; receives consultation/labs/x-ray, etc., request and assures completeness; processes above materials per procedure; receives record, retains for filing, recording, call backs as needed. Rearranges physician's schedule as needed to determine best time for "working in" same day patients originating through walk-in or telephone triage. Notifies front desk personnel to schedule patient accordingly.
  • Schedules patient's appointments into the individual C&P or specialty clinic. Conducts appointment reminder calls and reschedules appointments if necessary. Initiates patient appointments for laboratory and x-ray tests. Provides patients with instructions and information on appointments and diagnostic tests.
  • May assist with timekeeping and payroll.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 6:45am to 3:15pm (Selectee must reside on the island of Oahu.)

Qualifications

ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY: In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), No person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. You must be proficient in basic written and spoken English in order to meet the requirements of this position.

EXPERIENCE AND/OR EDUCATION REQUIREMENT:

EXPERIENCE: At least one year of specialized experience that equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the position to be filled. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (GS-4). Positions in this series range widely in type and include support duties to medical or health personnel such as audiologists, speech pathologists, medical officers, and optometrists. Therefore, technician experience is experience that required application of the knowledge, methods, and techniques of the position to be filled. Qualifying examples of specialized experience include providing patient care, measuring vital signs; assisting with examinations, treatments and procedures; performing EKG's and minor wound dressings; inspecting, cleaning, and disinfecting instruments and equipment; answering and processing telephone calls in a clinic; scheduling/canceling/rescheduling appointments; and recording health care information in electronic medical records. EDUCATION: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have successfully completed a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree, with the major study or at least 24 semester hours in subjects directly related to the position. NOTE: One year of full-time undergraduate study is defined as 30 semester hours, 45 quarter hours, or the equivalent in a college or university or at least 20 hours of classroom instruction per week for approximately 36 weeks in a business or technical school. Physical Requirements: Work requires constant walking, bending, standing, and sitting to assist physicians and patients. Incumbent will be required to assist in lifting and/or supporting a patient. Carrying supplies, folders and records up to 10 pounds.
