Serve as Research Professor of Russian and Eurasian Studies in the Strategic Studies Institute (SSI), the research institute of the US Army War College.
Perform research and publish SSI studies, journal articles, policy-oriented essays, special reports, books, and book chapters.
Design individual and collective annual research and publication plans, in consultation with SSI leadership, addressing contemporary national security issues and the application of landpower.
Conduct research focusing on Eurasian and Russian national security strategy and policy, including implications for the United States policy and defense as well as on NATO.
Develop recommendations to achieve key national security objectives specifically oriented toward those factors that impact U.S. and European defense priorities.
Engage in and occasionally lead collective (i.e., study group-based) cross-functional research and analysis teams.
Attend and participate in relevant academic conferences by presenting papers and/or acting as panel chair or discussant.
Coordinate and engage with and brief senior military headquarters in the region and external agencies on behalf of SSI, USAWC, and the Army.
Respond to specific requests from the US Army Chief of Staff, the Army and Joint Staffs, Office of the Secretary of Defense, US European and US Army European Command, or other elements of the Defense enterprise.
Lead, organize, and implement SSI and USAWC professional collaboration, conferences, seminars, symposiums, workshops, and meetings.
Contribute to the educational mission of the USAWC through teaching, lecturing, advising fellow faculty, curriculum development, and mentoring student research projects.
Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Top-Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment.
The duties of this position meet the criteria for compliance with Federal and Department of the Army Drug Free Workplace Programs. This position is subject to a pre-employment screening, and random testing thereafter.
This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 25% of the time.

Qualification Requirements: Degree: behavioral or social science; or related disciplines appropriate to the position; or Combination of education and experience that provided the applicant with knowledge of one or more of the behavioral or social sciences equivalent to a major in the field; or Four years of appropriate experience that demonstrated that the applicant has acquired knowledge of one or more of the behavioral or social sciences equivalent to a major in the field.
In addition to meeting the Qualification Requirements above, applicants will be rated on the following:
SELECTIVE PLACEMENT FACTOR/KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs):
1. A Ph.D., or equivalent evidence of scholarly experience, in international relations, regional or comparative studies, history, or related field, with an emphasis on Russia and/or Eurasia is strongly preferred.
2. Demonstrated knowledge of Russian national security issues and/or the Russian military.
3. Record of scholarly and/or applied research and publication in national security, regional defense, or military policy and strategy, history, transregional studies (Eurasia), or related areas. Working with interdisciplinary teams to examine strategic issues and conduct rigorous analytical research is desired.
4. Ability to serve as a project team lead and/or a team member of collaborative research projects.
5. Ability to teach and develop curriculum at the undergraduate, graduate, ad/or senior service college level is preferred.
6. Regional language proficiency in Russian and/or another Balto-Slavic language is preferred.
7. A record of successful government service involving defense policy and strategy formulation at the regional/strategic level or non-governmental work of a similar nature and scope, such as with a think tank, media organization, or international organization is desired, but not required.
