Duties

Help

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Receives, stores, inventories and distributes linen to the using units of this facility on a daily basis.
  • Controls and supplies all surgical linen
  • Issuing, marking, repairing and salvaging surgical linen, drapes, pillows, employee uniforms, cubical and shower curtains.
  • Sorting uniforms apparel, documenting by assigned number the uniforms forwarded to the consolidated laundry facility for laundering, and places on Auto Valet according to assigned number when returned from the consolidated laundry.
  • Removing and hanging cubicle curtains and window curtain, this requires the ability to move safely on a ladder.
  • Adjusting deliveries to meet the changing needs of the using units, weighing and maintaining daily records in pounds the linen requirements for each using unit for cost accounting purposes.
  • Utilizing proper technique in distributing and picking up linen to prevent cross contamination.
  • Providing required sanitation of linen carts and work areas, working with authorized disinfectants for sanitation purposes.


Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 7:30 am-4pm

Physical Requirements: Position requires continuous standing, walking, hand/eye coordination, turning, bending, overhead reaching and lifting at least 50 pounds. Incumbent must be able to push or pull up to 500 pound carts mounted on rollers.
Working Conditions: Work is inside in well lighted areas, subject to noise, hazards, lint, hot, humidity and movement of operating equipment. Incumbent is required to wear protective clothing when working in areas where mandatory because of exposure to infectious disease and biological waste. Safety precautions will be observed at all times.

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. The ability to perform as a Laundry Worker without more than normal supervision. Duties may include but not limited to: read and understand requests and types of textiles and work quotas; operate a variety of textile processing equipment such as a flat-worker ironer, spreader-feeder, folder-cross folder, small piece folder; recognize fabrics that may need special processing or may become damaged during the washing process; demonstrate ability to recognize items which have been damaged during the washing and/or recognize spotted or other items which have not been properly processed. Knowledge of operation of washer extractor, monorail system, and gas-and steam dryers.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. VHA HCPs do not include remote workers who only infrequently enter VHA locations.
