This position is located in the General Litigation Section, Commercial Litigation Unit, of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation. The Commercial Litigation Unit is responsible for providing legal advice, and conducting nationwide litigation, on resolution and receivership issues, including real estate, bankruptcy, subsidiary, and general litigation.

Duties

Help

  • Responsible for litigation that includes cases designated as protracted and/or involving novel and complex legal issues or involving large dollar amounts.
  • Maintains close communication with outside counsel to ensure compliance, consistency and accuracy of substantive and procedural positions and briefs.
  • Responsible for identifying and managing matters related to complex commercial litigation that arise from the FDIC’s role as receiver, liquidator, or conservator of failed financial institutions.
  • Leads the negotiation and consummation of the most highly complex, high-profile settlements in cases.
  • Prepares legal briefs, office memoranda, decrees and other documents on sensitive legal and litigation issues, including those involving questions of first impression and with conflicting precedent that requires extensive research, analyses, and/or unusual ingenuity to resolve and makes appellate recommendations.

Qualifications

Specialized experience must be directly related to the position being filled and is experience gained after issuance of bar membership.

This position has a positive education requirement, transcripts must be provided showing degree conferred. Official transcripts must be provided prior to appointment.

  • Education: All attorney and law clerk trainee positions have a minimum education requirement of a Juris Doctorate (J.D.) or Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) or Master of Laws (LL.M.) from a school  accredited by the American Bar Association (ABA).
  • Bar Membership: All attorney positions require current active bar membership (valid license to practice law). Admission to the bar of any state, District of Columbia, any United States territory or Commonwealth, or Federal Court is acceptable. Active Bar membership must be verified prior to appointment. Employees must maintain active bar membership while employed as an attorney with the FDIC.

Qualifying experience may be obtained in the private or public sector. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g. Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic, religious spiritual; community; student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.  Additional qualifications information can be found here.

CG-15: Applicant must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the grade 14 level in the Federal Service. Specialized experience is experience as an attorney conducting, coordinating or managing commercial litigation or litigation related to failed financial institutions.

Salary reflects a pay cap for this position of $252,500.

  2. Ability to coordinate the work of attorneys, paralegals, business groups, and other staff.
  3. Knowledge of failed financial institution and commercial litigation issues, including federal and state law relating to receiverships, asset liquidation, and bankruptcy law.
  4. Skill in the negotiation and settlement of legal matters.
  5. Ability to prepare pleadings, motions, briefs, and other legal documents.
  6. Knowledge of the rules of evidence and civil procedure and practice.
