Summary

This position is part of the National Archives and Records Administration, John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum. The incumbent will serve as the Library's representative to ensure proper customer service to researchers. These responsibilities include answering inquiries as to delivery and availability of archival materials that have been requested, including referral to other institutions containing materials not within NARA's custody.

Duties

Help

The following are the duties of this position at the GS-11. If you are selected at a lower grade level, you will have the opportunity to learn to perform all these duties, and will receive training to help you grow in this position.

As an ARCHIVES SPECIALIST, you will:

  • Respond to researcher inquiries as to delivery and availability of archival materials that have been requested.
  • Serve as primary representative to the library's cross media research staff, which analyzes Library research room practices and advises the senior staff on changes, modifications, and new practices designed to enhance customer service.
  • Answer reference requests received by mail, fax, telephone, or email from the public.
  • As required, develop new formats to answer new types of reference requests. This may entail arranging for and overseeing digitization and duplication of records in unusual formats or conditions such as fragile textual records or analogue Audio-Video (AV) materials.
  • Advise the Supervisory Archivist on donation offers and may consult with potential donors and arrange for donations at the supervisor's request.
  • As assigned, will work on special projects, reference requests, process improvements, and/or preservation efforts for the library's AV holdings.

The experience may have been gained in either the public, private sector or volunteer service. One year of experience refers to full-time work; part-time work is considered on a prorated basis.   • The work requires regular periods of standing and working with several members of the public at the same time in an office setting, lifting containers archival materials of up to 50 pounds, working with xerography copiers, photographic, audio and video and other equipment as needed to provide reference service or for preservation purposes

Qualifications

You must meet the following requirements by the closing date of this announcement.

Specialized Experience: For the GS-07, you must have one year of specialized experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the GS-05 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized Experience for this position includes:

Performing archival functions, such as; monitoring, pulling and refiling archival records, reference and research room work, arrangement and description, holdings maintenance and/or digitization of records;
AND
Providing customer service and guidance with record research and reference.

OR
Education: 1 full year of graduate level education OR superior academic achievement.
OR
Combining education and experience: You may qualify by a combination of experience and education. The total percentage of experience and education must equal 100%.
