A/C Equipment Mechanic Leader serves in the Refrigeration, Heating, Venting and Air Conditioning (HVAC) Section as a Working Leader of three or more employees located in the Veterans Administration Medical Center Louisville, Kentucky. Performs repair, rebuilding, retrofitting, and state-of-the-art updates for a variety of multi-function fixed and semi-fixed Refrigeration, Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) equipment. Duties include:

  • Must be UNIVERSAL E.P.A. certified to handle, recover, and reclaim refrigerants for all types of machines used at this medical center.
  • Supervises and/or performs inspections 20 % of the time; and repair, maintenance, installation, relocation, and trouble shooting a wide variety of non-production industrial hospital machinery, equipment, and systems located at the facility 80 % of the time.
  • Works with highly complex systems and equipment to provide specific and critical climate conditions in different locations, such as laboratories, operating rooms, nuclear medicine laboratories and exam rooms, X-Ray rooms and labs, computer rooms, SICU, MICU and CCU areas, morgue coolers, walk in boxes, blood banks, clinics, offices and wards.
  • Ensures the refrigeration and air conditioning mechanic worker makes preventative maintenance inspections, performs major overhauls, and completes installations and repairs to: exhaust fans, air conditioning and refrigeration equipment and steam operated cooking equipment.
  • Makes independent decisions on repairing, modifying, altering, balancing and specifying construction and repair components.
  • Ensure repairs to components such as compressors including disassembling, measuring tolerances and replacing valves, pistons, motors, oil pumps and reassembling components properly after repairs have been accomplished by technicians.
  • Ensures that needed plans, blueprints, materials, and tools are available, and that needed stock is obtained from appropriate supply sources to complete assigned work.
  • All other duties as assigned

Position Description Title/PD#: A/C Equipment Mechanic Leader/PD005306
Physical Requirements: Daily duties consist of climbing, working in cramped positions and confined spaces and moving and lifting heavy objects and equipment up to 75 pounds in the repairing and installation of AlC and refrigeration systems. Rigging devices, come-alongs, hoists, shop cranes, block and tackle are used in the removal of large compressors, coils, motors, air handlers, evaporators and condensers. He/she makes and/or makes repairs and installations from ladders, scaffolding, and platforms where the parts of systems are frequently in hard to reach places, therefore requiring stooping, stretching, bending and kneeling for long periods of time.
