Help

Performs a mix of routine and varying assignments associated with analyzing, installing, repairing, fabricating, or trouble-shooting electronic, electrical, and mechanical systems and components. Reviews, reads and understands blue prints, engineering drawings, and schematics. Applies experience and detailed technical knowledge of engineering principles, theories, and concepts at the full performance level as well as applicable procedures and policies. The work of this position involves functions such as research support, audits, testing, operation of facilities, systems, protocols/processes, test equipment repair, assembles or installs instruments and devices or materials. Use judgment, experience, and knowledge to solve problems and complete assignments.

Supports CSRT research activities as necessary to ensure that research and demonstration protocols meet safety requirements and data accuracy specifications. This includes assisting with instrumentation installation; facility preparation and checkout; experimental setup; data collection; and data storage. Because of the nature of the facilities and tests conducted, accomplishment of these activities requires mobility, eyesight, and hearing.

Responsible for the following facilities as assigned: (1) Water Survival Research Tank; (2) B-747 Aircraft Environment Research Facility; (3) Aircraft Cabin Research Facility (ACRF), (4) B-727 Aircraft Fire Laboratory, and associated laboratories. This activity includes as required; operating a forklift and ensuring the maintenance requirements of the various facilities, control systems, and associated equipment (smoke and fire generators) are met.

Ensures sufficient levels of expendable tools/supplies/materials are on hand to accomplish anticipated research projects and maintains an inventory of all the CSRT laboratory assets. Manages the procurement of these items to include purchasing with a government credit card if issued - gathers information on specifications, vendor sources, and cost estimates.

Ensures all systems are ready and test area is safe for personnel and observers during a test: supports implementation of all required FM Quality Management, Safety, Environmental, Institutional Review Board, and Health standards (e.g., ISO 9001, ISO 14001, OSHA. and EPA). Responds to CSRT laboratory safety or environmental incidents, prepares/completes reports, and helps conduct incident investigations. Conducts and/or supports training and audits related to CSRT facilities' quality and environmental compliance or operational safety. Develops plans and insures appropriate corrective actions are taken to eliminate or mitigate hazards.

Organizes and records documentation, logs, and other data collected from all cabin safety research conducted by the Laboratory. This includes the calculation and documentation of human subject research data when appropriate.

Work contributes to the activities of the Aerospace Medical Research Division and supports activities that are critical to the safe and continual operation of the NAS, FAA aircraft, and/or FAA academic programs. Contacts are primarily internal to the Aerospace Medical Research Division, with some contact with customers in other FAA offices and external organizations. Contacts are made to share information, provide data, furnish technical guidance, and discuss the statuses of assignments.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position at the FV-G (FG/GS 10-11) level, you must demonstrate in your application that you possess at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the FV-F (FG/GS 9 and below) level. Specialized experience is experience that has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position.

Specialized Experience includes: Experience installing, maintaining, operating, and testing duties on complex projects or systems; troubleshooting and repairing equipment/machinery; reviewing blue prints, engineering drawings, and schematics; develops plans and insures appropriate corrective actions are taken to eliminate or mitigate hazards; maintains inventory; gathers information on specifications, vendor sources, and cost estimates; cords documentation, logs, and other data collected

AND

Quality Ranking Factor (QRF): Well-qualified candidates will demonstrate experience with cabin safety research within their resume.

Physical Requirements: You must be able to perform efficiently the essential functions of the position without hazard to yourself or others. Selectee must pass a pre-employment physical prior to appointment.
