Help
  • Perform the full range of installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair on a variety of industrial and commercial systems.
  • Provide for a variety of air conditioning functions such as heating (oil and gas fired boilers, furnaces and incinerators), cooling, humidifying, dehumidifying, cleaning, filtering, and circulating.
  • Drives various vehicles (e.g., utility truck or similar vehicle (primarily under 10,000 gross vehicle weight) to and from the work site.

  • The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles.
  • This position has been designated "Mission Essential". In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situationsthe incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.
  • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter.
  • Incumbent must possess and maintain Universal (types I, II, and III) Certification as required by 40 CFR Part 82, Subpart F.
  • Appointment to this position is subject to a one year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315.

However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic ~ without more than normal supervision. I have the ability to perform the full range of Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic tasks. I am skilled in making visual, audible, and mechanical checks for proper temperature of conditioned spaces, proper operation of different parts of refrigeration systems, proper oil levels, unusual noises, loose connections, and faulty insulation; applying prescribed testing procedures and equipment; and exploring probable reasons for equipment failure; performing complete system repairs such as dismantling, repairing and reassembling units such as pumps, impellers, compressors, chillers, receivers, and evaporators. I work on my own initiative under general supervision subject to occasional inspection. - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

This position requires a job-related license or certification. You MUST submit a copy of your license or certification with your application package or you will be rated ineligible.

  • PHYSICAL EFFORT

Employee is frequently required to handle and carry tools and equipment that weight over 23 kilograms (50 pounds). Maneuvers large equipment into and out of specific locations while dismantling and reassembling. Hoists, holders and pulleys are operated when removing units such as large compressors, condensers and chillers. Makes repairs and installations from ladders, scaffolding and platforms where the parts of systems worked on are frequently in hard-to-reach places; therefore, stooping, stretching, bending and kneeling are frequent for long periods of time.

  • WORKING CONDITIONS

Much of this work is performed outside with exposure to temperature extremes common to this area. Some work performed indoors and in mechanical rooms. The employee will be required to work in mechanical rooms, on top of buildings, in drafty attic spaces subject to temperature extremes, and in cramped areas with low overheads. Subject to cuts, burns, electrical shocks and respiratory ailments. Employee uses/wears any safety equipment or other items required and provided by the employer.

Education

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this position, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
