Duties

Help
  • You will perform welding work in support of the U.S. Navy, Command Naval Region South West, Port Operations.
  • You will perform welding services in a variety of positions including flat, horizontal, vertical, and overhead.
  • You will weld on all types of metals in various sizes and shapes including: Pressure vessels, structural form, plate, castings, forging, sheet metal, machinery and equipment.
  • You will fabricate, assemble, and repair tugs, boats, and other service crafts.

  • Must complete job qualification requirements and personal qualifications standards requirements as assigned by the installation program director.
  • Must be capable of wearing/using all required safety equipment such as: respirators (all types), hard hats, safety shoes, safety glasses, hearing protection, etc.
  • May be required to work with hazardous materials such as fuel additives, paints, thinners, batteries and corrosives.
  • Work involves continual standing while working at a bench, frequent walking from shop to shop, stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing, and crawling.
  • Work is often performed in awkward and cramped positions.
  • Frequent lifting is required to handle objects weighing from 20-50 pounds and occasionally, objects weighing in excess of 50 pounds.
  • Work may be performed in areas that are noisy, dirty, and smoky.
  • May be exposed to hazardous and unpleasant conditions including vibration, excessive noise, fumes, flying particles, welding flashes, dust, dirt, and grime.
  • Subject to damage to eyes and respiratory system, broken bones, bruises, cuts, shock, and burns.

Qualifications

Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most trade and labor occupations, you must show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying.

Qualification requirements emphasis is on quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time. Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies. This job has a screen-out element which will be used to determine minimum eligibility for this job. The Screen-out Element for this position is: 1) Selects proper size and type of fill material, oxy-fuel gas mixtures, flux, and shielding gas mixture for items to be welded; 2) Selects proper welding sequence and specified joint designs; 3) Uses carbon arc process for cutting or removing metal; 4) Braze or solder material; 5) Identify and associate metals and electrodes by color code and standard markings.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.
