Duties

Help
  • Messages consist of instructions on movement of the train as to present and future assignments and must be accurately received and transmitted.
  • Shifts, spots, and switches rail cars carrying ordinance material and other supplies throughout the installation.
  • Serves as a crew member in charge with responsibility for the safe operation of the engine, train, and crew within the installation.
  • Serves as a conductor in the absence of the primary conductor.
  • Performs operator maintenance on the locomotive by assuring proper level of oil in crankcase, checking level of water or antifreeze in cooling system and batteries.
  • Prior to use, inspects locomotives and completes DD Form 862, Daily Inspection Worksheet for Diesel Electric Locomotives and Locomotive Cranes

  • This position is subject to a pre-employment screening, and random testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
  • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
  • In accordance with AR 690-11, this position has been designated as "Key" and shall not be vacated during a national emergency or mobilization as doing so would seriously impair the capability of the organization to function effectively.
  • The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles.
  • Appointment to this position is subject to a one-year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315.
  • This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 10% of the time.
  • This position requires irregular work hours required after normal duty hours, weekends, holidays, evenings, and nights to support training requirements.
  • This position requires the incumbent to maintain a Class A Commercial Driver's License.
  • This position requires the incumbent to obtain locomotive engineer certification as described in U.S. CFR Title 49, Subtitle B, Chapter II, Part 240, Qualification and Certification of locomotive engineer within one year of entry into the position
  • Incumbent is required to have a current military conductor card or a commercial railroad conductor card that is not expired.

Qualifications

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

There is no specific length of training or experience required. However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a Locomotive Engineer (Motor Vehicle Operator) ~ without more than normal supervision to include 1) Inspect locomotives to include checking drivers' flat spots, position of air valves and gauge readings, unusual noises, sanders and brake shoes and their operating condition; 2) Shift rail cars carrying ordinance material and other supplies throughout the area of operation and 3) Prepares daily report on the operation of the locomotive, noting any malfunctions or deficiencies discovered. - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

Selective Placement Factor:
The duties of this position require the possession of a valid Class A Commercial Driver's License. (Note: You must attach a copy of your valid license with your application package.)

  • PHYSICAL EFFORT: Work is performed from a sitting or standing position and requires constant use of hands and arms in starting, stopping, and breaking. Operates the locomotive through numerous traffic crossings. Locomotive operation requires ability for very close eye, hand manipulation while regulating a variety of levers and locomotive controls while watching and interpreting signals and verbal instructions of a railroad conductor or brakeman. Position requires infrequent heavy lifting (45 lbs.) of access ways and covers on the locomotive during operational check of batteries, electrical assembly's brakes, etc., and when unloading sand to rail sander. Must be able to climb up and down steep steps or ladders to board and leave trains.
  • WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is performed in varying weather conditions and subject to exposure to rain and freezing conditions. Subject to dust and fumes. Work is primarily performed within the enclosed locomotive cab with the requirement to operate with side windows open during more inclement weather conditions for visibility reasons. Ear and eye protective devices and safety toed shoes will be worn at all times of actual exposure to hazardous conditions.
