Duties

Help
  • Give advice, counsel, and instruction to lower graded employees.
  • Coordinate all actions required to maintain the Hazardous Material Inventory and Disposal System.
  • Maintain the chemical inventory and complete required federal and state reporting.
  • Evaluate design proposals and determine the impact on pollution prevention initiatives and the environment.
  • Recognize and recommend needs for initiatives on special studies and projects.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Basic Requirement for Lead Chemist:

A. Degree: Bachelor's degree (or higher degree) in the physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering that included 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by course work in mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics.

OR

B. Combination of Education and Experience: Course work equivalent to a major in the physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering, including at least 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

IN ADDITION to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the Specialized Experience qualification requirements listed below:

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes 1) Assisting in performing chemical analyses and testing on a broad range of chemical samples; 2) Reviewing chemical properties and physical state of samples; 3) Assisting in writing reports on studies based on findings; 4) Conducting environmental and occupational health sample analysis and preparation; 5) Utilizing diverse instrumental and chemical techniques; and 6) Conducting audits to ensure compliance. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-11).
