Duties

Help

  • Reviews charts of assigned patients to determine appropriate services based on patient needs (pre-visit planning). Incorporates and applies protocols in health promotion for well populations as well as treatment interventions for chronic conditions.
  • Incumbent is alert to safety and infection control issues and reports any incidents to the Licensed Physician and other team leads. Responds to emergencies in an appropriate manner by obtaining equipment and by caring for other patients during the emergency process as needed.
  • Assists with direct patient care procedures and related tasks by checking in patients; chief complaint/purpose of visit; taking vital signs of temperature, height, weight, blood pressure, respirations and oxygen saturations.
  • Prepares and administers prescribed medication by oral, intradermal, subcutaneous, and intramuscular routes; monitors patient after medication administration for reactions and complications.
  • Provides care to assigned patients under the direction of the Licensed Physician. Provides basic care to patients with a variety of conditions, illnesses and/or injuries such as apply and remove dressings, perform Electrocardiograms, apply slings or braces, apply heat and cold packs, assists patient in ambulation, transferring, positions, etc.
  • Educates, advises and documents specific patient medical issues in accordance with established parameters and hospital policy and procedures.
  • Maintains a courteous and a professional manner appearance with internal and external customer in accordance with established protocols. Answers phone and provides routine information as needed to established unit guidelines.

Position requires formal education/training, competency and certification as a Certified Medical Assistant; completion of an approved Medical Assistant training program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) or the Accrediting Bureau of health Education Schools (ABHES), or by an accrediting agency recognized by the US Department of Education. Employee must maintain their certification.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.

BASIC REQUIREMENT(S):
Training:
- Completed an approved medical assistant training program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) or the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES), or by any accrediting agency recognized by the United State Department of Education. OR
- Completed a medical services training program of the Armed Forces of the United States that provided clinical proficiency with the necessary scope of knowledge to perform the duties as described in the vacancy announcement.

Certification:
- Current and active Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) certification from the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA). OR
- Current and active Registered Medical Assistant certification (RMA) from the American Medical Technologists (AMT). OR
- Current and active National Certified Medical Assistant certification (NCMA) from the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT). OR
- Completed a medical services training program of the Armed Forces of the United States that provided clinical proficiency with the necessary scope of knowledge to perform the duties as described in the vacancy announcement.

In addition to the Basic Requirements, you must also meet the Minimum Qualifications stated below.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: GS-0640-06: Venipuncture, collecting lab specimens, performing basic wound/skin care measures, and administering oral medical, typical of experienced medical assistant or health education positions.

SELECTIVE PLACEMENT FACTOR - Position requires formal education/training, competency and certification as a CMA, completion of an approved Medical Assisting training program accredited by the commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) or the accrediting agency recognized by the US Department of Education. Employee must maintain their certification.

Time In Grade
Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP).

Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. IHS may offer newly-appointed Federal employees credit for their directly related previous non-federal experience or active duty uniformed military service. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave.

This position is covered by a Bargaining Unit.
