Duties

Help

  • Serves as a Social Science Analyst in the Department of Justice (DOJ), Office of Justice Programs (OJP), National Institute of Justice (NIJ), Office of Research, Evaluation, Forensics & Technology (OREFT), Office of Crime Prevention and Youth Justice (OCPYJ).
  • Provides scientific oversight of one or more social science research portfolios in OCPYJ, including a variety of program grants, research-based grants, contracts, and cooperative agreements.
  • Acts as a subject matter expert and scientific advisor for a significant segment of a social science or program area with a focus on child protection, delinquency prevention, youth justice systems, school safety, human trafficking, hate crimes, and/or other related content areas.
  • Performs analytical research, evaluation, program development and other tasks in furtherance of OCPYJ functions and portfolios related to crime prevention and youth justice.
  • Develops, implements, analyzes, and disseminates a range of extramural and intramural social science research and evaluation projects that employ different research methods.
  • Takes on the responsibility of an expert advisor and technical authority on complex and groundbreaking policy and program challenges, formulating policies, strategies, requirements, and plans for social science research programs and projects with agency-wide impact.

Qualifications

Basic Entry Requirements:
Degree in behavioral or social science; or related disciplines appropriate to the position.
-OR-
Combination of education and experience that provides the knowledge of one or more of the behavioral or social sciences equivalent to a major in the field.
-OR-
Four years of appropriate experience that demonstrates the acquired knowledge of one or more of the behavioral or social sciences equivalent to a major in the field.


Selective Placement Factor:

  • Previous or current experience in conducting or overseeing research in the topic areas of child protection, delinquency prevention, youth justice systems, school safety, human trafficking, and/or hate crimes.


Specialized Experience:
Applicants must have one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-13 level. Specialized experience is experience which is in or related to the line of work of the position to be filled and which has equipped the applicant with the specific knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position.

Examples of specialized experience include:

  • Conducts research and/or analyzes recent advancements in social science disciplines to ensure that the planning, implementation, and evaluation of criminal and juvenile justice research programs are based on current scientific knowledge and methodologies.
  • Investigates and/or assesses the research needs of criminal and juvenile justice communities to ensure that the planning, implementation, and evaluation of criminal justice research programs are aligned with the field's requirements.
  • Conducts and/or manages specialized studies or evaluations of programs related to crime prevention and youth justice, or other related areas of practice.

The selectee will be required to physically report to the OJP office building at least four (4) days per bi-weekly pay period and may incorporate leave and official travel plans into this reporting requirement. The office director or supervisor may request the selectee's presence in the office more frequently, as determined by the needs of the office. The selectee will be responsible for covering all commuting-related travel expenses. OJP employees are eligible for one transportation benefit - parking or the Department of Justice (DOJ) transit subsidy.
