Help

As a Statistician within the Central Energy Resouces Science Center, some of your specific duties will include:

  • Uses statistical and mathematical models of geology, energy resources, and sedimentary basins to understand, characterize, and describe the nature, occurrence, volume, aerial extent, and uncertainty/risking of domestic and international petroleum resources.
  • Develops, tests, and applies statistical theories, hypotheses, and new, innovative natural resource models, methodologies, and/or workflows, both conceptual and quantitative, that incorporate uncertainty in geological, geophysical, and geochemical databases to predict the formation, evolution, and quantity of petroleum resources across a range of temporal and spatial scales.
  • Applies and deploys statistical theory, processes, and practices, as well as mathematical concepts and methods to improve, develop, and implement new peer-reviewed methodologies for the assessment of technically recoverable conventional and unconventional oil and gas resources in the U.S. and world. Adapts and develops new statistical methods to solve specific problems related to petroleum assessments.
  • Provides comprehensive, professional guidance and input to ERP geoscientists in the development, implementation, and application of the full spectrum of statistical and methodological issues related to the quantitative assessment of petroleum and other energy resources.
  • Serves as an expert and the primary point of contact to assist scientists and managers on statistical theory, analytical methods, quantitative methodologies and results, and the use, interpretation, and significance of assessed resources and their effects on resource management strategies, energy development scenarios, and impacts on the environment and domestic economics. Presents results and findings of statistical theories, mathematical and multivariate analysis, Monte Carlo simulations, probabilistic models and distributions, and analysis of spatial statistics of petroleum resources at conferences and in technical journals and publications.
  • Operates a government owned/leased vehicle as an incidental driver.

Qualifications

DEFINITIONS:

Undergraduate Education: A year of undergraduate education is 30 semester hours, 45 quarter hours or the equivalent of college study. This education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university for which high school graduation or the equivalent was a prerequisite.

Experience: One year of work experience is twelve months working full-time (at least 35-40 hours per week). Part-time experience can be pro-rated (i.e., a year at 20 hours per week is credited as 6 months of experience). If your position consisted of mixed duties, experience credit is given for the percentage of time that you spent on qualifying duties (i.e., if you held a position for 2 years, full-time, consisting of 25% personnel work and 75% budget work, and then applied for a budget position you could calculate your experience as follows: 2 years = 24 months. 24 months x 75% [percentage of time spent on budget duties] = 18 months of qualifying experience).

Graduate Education: In the absence of specific graduate program information, a year of graduate education is 18 semester hours or 27 quarter hours of graduate level college course work, or the number of credit hours the school attended has determined to represent 1 year of full-time study. This education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university.

BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT: Applicants must meet A or B below to satisfy the basic education requirement for Statistician, all grade levels.

A. Degree: that included 15 semester hours in statistics (or in mathematics and statistics, provided at least 6 semester hours were in statistics), and 9 additional semester hours in one or more of the following: physical or biological sciences, medicine, education, or engineering; or in the social sciences including demography, history, economics, social welfare, geography, international relations, social or cultural anthropology, health sociology, political science, public administration, psychology, etc. Credit toward meeting statistical course requirement should be given for courses in which 50 percent of the course content appears to be statistical methods, e.g., courses that included studies in research methods in psychology or economics such as tests and measurements or business cycles, or courses in methods of processing mass statistical data such as tabulating methods or electronic data processing.

OR

B. Combination of education and experience-course work as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. The experience should have included a full range of professional statistical work such as (a) sampling, (b) collecting, computing, and analyzing statistical data, and (c) applying statistical techniques such as measurement of central tendency, dispersion, skewness, sampling error, simple and multiple correlation, analysis of variance, and tests of significance.

GS-12:
In addition to the basic education requirement stated above, applicants must meet the following to qualify for the GS-12 level:

One year of specialized experience in or directly related to this position that equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of this position. To be creditable, the required specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the GS-11 level in the Federal service.

Examples of such experience may include: initiating, formulating, planning, executing, and controlling statistical studies related to energy assessment projects; serving as a consultant and advisor to subject matter specialists and project chiefs responsible for broad energy research programs; advising and consulting on problems involving the theory or application of statistical methods; originating broad and comprehensive statistical methods for energy-related projects.

GS-13:
In addition to the basic education requirement stated above, applicants must meet the following to qualify for the GS-13 level:

One year of specialized experience in or directly related to this position that equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of this position. To be creditable, the required specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the GS-12 level in the Federal service.

Examples of such experience may include: initiating, formulating, planning, aw well as executing and controlling major statistical studies or continuing projects; serving as consultant and advisor to top-level subject matter specialists, project chiefs, or other agency officials responsible for broad energy research programs; advising and consulting on a variety of problems involving the theory or application of statistical methods; originating broad and comprehensive statistical methods for energy-related projects.
