Summary

The Voluntary Internship Program is an unpaid internship program. Working under the direction of NARA staff, interns will be exposed to a broad spectrum of work and opportunities across various offices, records centers, libraries, and museums. Spring internships will begin the week of January 27, 2025 or February 3, 2025 and will last for 12 weeks. Participants must complete a 100-hour minimum requirement.

Duties

Help

Voluntary Interns' duties will depend on the NARA office or site to which they are assigned. NARA seeks students in various areas of interest to complete internships at our facilities throughout the country. Internships will last roughly 12 weeks, averaging between 10 to 40 hours per week for a minimum of 100 hours. Spring interns are expected to work on-site at least 50 percent of the time. Interns will collaborate with their supervisors to determine their work schedules.

Conditions of employment

  • Current high school, undergraduate, and graduate students OR former students who graduated within the past three years.
  • Must be U.S. Citizens.
  • Must be able to successfully pass a criminal background check.
  • Must be at least 16 years old.

Qualifications

Interested applicants must apply by 11:59 ET on November 15, 2024, and will be required to upload a cover letter, resume, and transcript (including GPA) from their most recent educational institution.

  • Applicants MUST submit all required documentation. Missing documentation will deem your application ineligible.
  • If you do not submit sufficient documentation necessary to demonstrate that you meet the eligibility requirements described in this announcement, your application will be deemed incomplete, and you will be found ineligible.

Education

Education must be accredited by an accrediting institution recognized by the U.S. Department of Education in order for it to be credited toward qualifications. Therefore, provide only the attendance and/or degrees from schools accredited by accrediting institutions recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.

  • Applicants must be enrolled at least part-time in an accredited academic institution.
OR
  • Applicants must have graduated or completed a degree or certificate within the last three years.

Additional information

  • All Voluntary Internship Program positions are unpaid, although we can assist with the necessary paperwork if you identify outside funding or can receive credit from your academic institution.
  • Appointment to the internship is subject to favorable evaluation of the appropriate security and suitability investigation.
  • Depending on the internship location, some interns may be eligible for public transit benefits.

The exact qualifications vary by internship, and NARA selecting officials will evaluate submitted documents and application form responses to make decisions about which candidates will receive interview offers. In addition to your education, work background, and personal motivation information included in your resume, cover letter, and transcript, they will also consider these factors:

Completed applications will be forwarded to selecting officials at NARA, who will arrange interviews based on the application package and desired skills. Upon an interview offer, selecting officials may also request letters of recommendation, writing samples, and/or references in addition to your initial application.
