These positions can be filled in any of the following VAOIG locations: Austin, TX; Dallas, TX; Denver-Aurora, CO; Kansas City, MO; Orlando, FL; San Diego, CA; Seattle, WA; and Washington DC.

As a Supervisory Data Scientist, you will:

  • Refine policy and business questions to develop hypothesis to establish scope and methodology, identify and acquire internal and external data sets, metadata, and other system, application, or contextual information needed for specific analytic problems.
  • Prepare raw data from a diverse set of structured and unstructured formats, by combining, cleaning, transforming, and producing new formats that are usable for analytics.
  • Initiate and lead entire data analytic cycles, including forming a context-relevant question or hypothesis, identifying sources of data and obtaining data, processing and transforming data so it is conducive to analysis, summarizing and analyzing data to create statistical evidence, and creating and communicating results.
  • Query and mine large data sets to discover patterns and trends, examines data and filters for targeted information using traditional/exploratory and advanced analytic and data mining techniques.
  • Build advanced visualization models to display complex and massive data, including networks, sequences, and geographic information, to make conjectures based on data-driven evidence.

Qualifications

You must meet the following requirements by the closing date of this announcement.

Specialized Experience: To be qualified for this position at the GS-15 level, you must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-14 level that has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. Specialized experience is defined as work that involves:

-Using Structured Query Language (SQL), R, Python, Statistical Analysis System (SAS), or equivalent statistical analysis packages to query and analyze data from nation- or enterprise-wide data warehouses; AND
-Planning and directing statisticians and data scientists who are responsible for conducting statistical analysis; Planning, implementing, and directing robust processes to ensure that data for analysis are in high quality, methods for data analysis are sound, and interpretation of findings are objective to help make informed decisions; AND
-Planning, implementing, and directing overarching analytic projects and initiatives.

Education

To be qualified for this position, you must meet the basic educational and/or work experience requirements for Data Scientist positions in the federal government. These requirements are:

A)
A degree in mathematics, statistics, computer science, data science or field directly related to the position. The degree must be in a major field of study (at least at the baccalaureate level) that is appropriate for the position.
OR
B)
A combination of education and experience with courses equivalent to a major field of study (30 semester hours/45 quarter hours) as shown in paragraph A above, plus additional education or appropriate experience.

The education generally must be from an accredited (or pre-accredited) college or university recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.

Conditions of Employment (CONTINUED):
- A one year probationary period may be required.
-A one year supervisory or managerial probationary period may be required.
- Must successfully complete a background investigation.
- Public Trust - Background Investigation will be required.
