Duties

Help
  • Plans and constructs custom shipping and storage containers for items of irregular size and shape for production and prototype components to insure their safe shipment or storage.
  • Selects, measures and cuts lumber for nonstandard, skidded, trussed or sheathed containers with several shapes, sizes, and features.
  • Sets up and operates cut-off saws, table saws, band saws, drill press and jointer to cut component parts of boxes and crates.
  • Uses shop plans, blueprints, and item specifications to develop bracing points based on weight of the item, gravity center, and method of shipment to prevent shifting or damage in transit or storage.
  • Packs boxes and containers filling unused space and fastening lid. Modifies existing containers to use for other parts; repairs and overhauls containers received by WVA for further use.

  • Constructs or modifies shelves, racks, bins, wooden carrying cases and special containers, stools, benches, bulletin boards, wooden platforms and equipment stands.
  • Works with crew engaged in blocking and bracing materials being shipped by freight or truck.
  • Operates 15000-pound forklift in loading and unloading of materials.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Wood Worker (Fork Lift Operator) without more than normal supervision which includes: (1) Set up and operating tools and equipment such as cut-off saws, band saws, drill press and jointer; (2) Determining the type and extent of construction or repair necessary to build, modify and/or restore wooden containers; and (3) Skill in operating a fork lift to load and unload materials/items. - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

PHYSICAL EFFORT: The work requires frequent standing, walking, bending and stooping. In addition, the work requires lifting and carrying items weighing up to 40 pounds with assistance of other workers of lifting devices.

WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is performed inside and outside in all types of weather. Inside work areas can range from well lit, climatically controlled to poorly illuminated work areas. Exposed to noise and dust from power saws, hammers, nailing machines, and related equipment. Subject to bruises, cuts, and other injuries from using hand and power tools. Safety equipment and protective devices are used to minimize hazards.
