Duties

Help
  • Assists supervisor in classifying Wild Horse Burro (WHB) as they are received from gathers, validating information with regard to age, sex, health, and overall conditions.
  • Completes work after initial oral/written instructions and is responsible for the safe handling of domestic and wild horses and burros in a manner that avoids injuries to the animals, themselves, or other workers.
  • Inspects animals coming into the facility; reports any injuries and obvious disease symptoms among animals and assists in record keeping of WHB as they are received or shipped from the facility.
  • Herd’s animals through corral system including the chutes where they may be restrained for aging, medicated, freeze branded, gelded, or subjected to other treatments.
  • Assists contract veterinarians in inoculating, de-worming, drawing blood samples for testing for disease and treating of injured or diseased animals.
  • Ability to use of tape and ruler measuring devices, and squares accurately in order to perform basic repairs and maintenance needs.
  • Work is completed independently after receiving initial oral or written instructions from a lead or supervisor, assigned in terms of what is scheduled.
  • Work is evaluated for compliance with policies, procedures, and instructions pertinent to the use of motor vehicles in transporting WHB.
  • Responsible for selecting the tools, deciding on standard methods and techniques and use specific instruction to independently carry-out assignments.
  • Troubleshoots, and performs basic maintenance and seeks assistance from others when major maintenance is needed. Ability to use and maintain tools and equipment.
  • Operates 36-foot horse trailers, and various truck and motor vehicles with a gross vehicle weight of 26,000 lbs. up to 32,000 lbs.
  • Operates dump truck, front end loaders or other motor vehicles up to 1-ton 4x4 pickups, 2-ton flatbed trucks or other vehicles up to 10,000 lbs. up to 26,000 lbs.
  • Performs a variety of basic maintenance duties including plumbing, carpentry painting, welding, and fence repairs.
  • Rides and handles saddle horses to safely control WHB from horseback on the open range, in corrals and in pen areas for gathers or general care.

Ability to inspect animals coming into the facility, report any injuries and obvious disease symptoms among animals and assists in record keeping of WH&B as they are received or shipped from the facility.

Physical Demands: Work related to WH&B requires considerable and strenuous physical exertion to handle, ride (e.g. full gallop), rope, maneuver and restrain domesticated horses and wild horses and burros up to 1,500 pounds. Work involves physical exertion and agility while performing duties such as heavy lifting (i.e., bay bales weighing in excess of 100 pounds, unloading and carrying portable panels, steel fence posts, jute, other materials and equipment), bending, walking, standing, operating of trucks, coupling and uncoupling of trailers and working with other equipment (e.g., torches for welding).

Work Environment: Working with WH&B inherently includes hazards and dangers while riding, roping, corralling, counting, loading, handling and caring for wild animals where conditions cannot always be controlled. Hazards and dangers consist of being kicked, scratched, bitten, falling, or being run over.
- Driving vehicles and hauling WH&B requires safe operation for on highways, in facilities, off road and rough road terrain in all weather conditions.
- Welding involves exposure to fumes, infrared and ultraviolet radiations, heat, flying sparks and the possibility of eye injury and burns. Welding also includes work in awkward or cramped positions to get to hard-to-reach places. Proper safety equipment will be worn to minimize risks.
- Work will be outside in HMA's, corrals, and other areas in various conditions (i.e., dusty, rainy, snowy, humid) and temperatures (i.e., over 100 degrees F; below zero temperatures). There are risks related lo slippery, muddy, frozen, uneven, and rocky ground.
- May be required to work in regular work schedules, weekends and holidays.
