Help

As a Supervisory Museum Specialist within the Geological Materials Repository (GMR), some of your specific duties will include:

  • Curation and inventory management of physical samples, materials, and data, e.g., geological specimens, for study and analysis.
  • Metadata documentation of working scientific collections and associated items for inventory in the Registry of Scientific Collections (ReSciColl) following metadata standards.
  • Train and support scientists and collection stewards on assessment, policy, and cataloging of scientific collections with a focus on socialization of the USGS Policy on Scientific Working Collections Management.
  • Supervise Museum Specialists and Technicians in the daily operations of all aspects of the GMR including establishment of work priorities and task assignment to subordinates.
  • Oversee warehouse operations and equipment.
  • Advise the GMR Director on strategic vision and mission development.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet the following to qualify for the GS-12 level: One year of specialized experience in or directly related to this position that equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of this position.

To be creditable, the required specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the GS-11 level in the Federal service.
Examples of demonstrated expertise in the following knowledge and skillsets:

  • Experience related to the operation or management of a museum or scientific research collection of samples/specimens. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include collections management, collection registration, sample cataloging, research, preservation, collection restoration, or conservation of collections of scientific material, or other experience related to the position to be filled.
  • Experience in maintenance and safety responsibilities as well as oversight of warehouse or repository operations.
  • Expertise with the identification, documentation and cataloging of geological specimens and data is required.
  • Experience in presenting scientific information to scientific professionals.
  • Experience managing databases including quality assurance and quality control procedures for data management.
  • Experience establishing and providing training to junior staff, peers, and leadership are beneficial and will be a required activity for this position.
  • Experience providing responsive customer service and support are essential and a knack for saavy public relations, professional relationship building, and interpersonal skills are important.
  • Expertise in project management and team leadership.
  • Experience with subordinate tasking and management is required.
  • Experience developing work plans, employee performance plans and appraisals, and plans for employee development.
