Duties

Help
  • Utilize hospital automated patient health record related software such as, the Military Health System (MHS) GENESIS to retrieve various reports and input data.
  • Serve as Medical Records Technician (MRT), functioning primarily as an inpatient/ outpatient records coder.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory and third-party insurance requirements in utilizing the International Code of Diseases-10 Clinical Modifications (ICD-10-CM), and Procedure Coding System (PCS) coding books.
  • Assign specific codes to medical records, sequencing and determining codes to accurately reflect the resources and procedures used in the care of the patients.
  • Use specialized procedures and methods to correct and amend records.
  • Code complicated medical records having diagnostic, surgical and therapeutic procedures on specific DRGs that are identified as difficult to classify.
  • Identify and document any incident which may denote a potential compensatory event or questionable breach of quality of care delivered.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes performing support work in connection with processing and maintaining medical records for compliance with regulatory requirement; extracting data for statistical reports; using the International Classification of Diseases, Clinical Modification (ICD-10-CM) to code and classify diagnoses, the Procedural Coding System (CPT) to describe medical, surgical and diagnostic services and procedures using precise medical terminology for accurate coding to describe medical, surgical, and diagnostic services and procedures.

Certification from American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) or American Academy of Professional Coders is highly desired.
One of the following certifications below, while not required, is highly desirable:

  • American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA).
  • Certified Coding Specialist-Physician Based (CCS-P).
  • Certified Coding Specialist (CCS).
  • Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT).
  • American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC)
  • Certified Professional Coder (CPC).

Education

This job does not have an education qualification requirement.

Additional information
