As a Student Trainee (Admin Support) your duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Uses a personal computer or computer terminal with varied keyboard procedures to type a wide variety of materials involving different forms, formats, arrangements, preparation, and processing procedures.
  • Supports the administration of financial assistance processes by preparing documents and compiling budget and fiscal data from financial management reports for the supervisor of the assigned office.
  • Prepares purchase orders for supplies, equipment, and services for the assigned office and coordinates with the appropriate staff with purchasing authority.
  • Maintains ready-reference files of frequently consulted regulations, policies, directives and other material.
  • Maintains capitalized and controlled property records.

To be eligible for a Pathways Program internship program, you must meet the following requirements:

  • You must be a student accepted for enrollment or currently enrolled in a degree or certificate program on at least a half-time basis and in good standing who will be continuing education into the next semester or have received a notice of acceptance for enrollment. (You are required to submit a copy of your transcript or notice of acceptance.)
  • Enrollment must be with an accredited educational institution. These may include, colleges, universities, technical, trade, vocational, or business schools.
  • Qualifying certificate programs are post-high school programs equivalent to at least one academic year of full-time study that is part of an accredited college-level, technical, trade, vocational, or business school curriculum.

Pathways Student Intern: The Department of the Interior Internship Program (Pathways) is designed to provide students enrolled in a wide variety of educational institutions, from undergraduate to graduate level, with opportunities to work in agencies and explore Federal careers while still in school.

Special Provisions for Interns with Previous Related Education or Experience: Previous education and/or experience may be evaluated to determine the highest grade level for which the individual is qualified.

Current students in an accredited college (including 4-year colleges/universities, community colleges, and junior colleges); professional, technical, vocational, and trade school; advanced degree programs; or other qualifying educational institution pursuing a qualifying degree or certificate.

In order to qualify for this position, you must possess both the Basic Requirement and Minimum Qualification.

Basic Requirement:
  1. A student who has been accepted for enrollment or who are currently enrolled at least half-time in an accredited college, professional, technical, vocational, or trade school pursuing a qualifying degree or certificate, in a discipline/academic program related to the position.
Minimum Qualification [GS-3]
  1. In order to be eligible for this student appointment at the GS-3 grade-level, you must have completed 1 (one) academic year of post-high school study. An academic year of undergraduate education is defined as 30 semester hours, 45 quarter hours or the equivalent in an accredited college or university. (Note: You must submit a copy of your transcripts or degree audits to verify your qualifications for this grade level).
Minimum Qualification [GS-4]
  1. In order to be eligible for this student appointment at the GS-4 grade-level, you must have completed 2 (two) academic years of post-high school study or associate's degree (two years of full-time academic study is defined as 60 semester hours, 90 quarter hours, or the equivalent in a college or university) in a discipline/academic program related to the position. (Note: You must submit a copy of your transcripts or degree audits to verify your qualifications for this grade level).
Minimum Qualification [GS-5]
  1. In order to be eligible for this student appointment at the GS-5 grade-level, you must have completed 4 (four) academic years of post-high school study leading to a bachelor's degree or equivalent degree (four years of full-time academic study is defined as 120 semester hours, 180 quarter hours, or the equivalent in a college or university) in a discipline/academic program related to the position. (Note: You must submit a copy of your transcripts or degree audits to verify your qualifications for this grade level).
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Education

PROOF OF EDUCATION: All applicants must submit copies of official or unofficial transcripts which include grades, credit hours earned, major(s), grade point average or class ranking, academic standing, institution name, and student name. If any required coursework is not easily recognizable on transcripts, or if you believe a portion of a particular course can be credited toward meeting an educational requirement, you must also provide a memorandum on letterhead from the institution's registrar, dean, or other appropriate official stating the percentage of the course that should be considered to meet the requirement and the equivalent number of units. Unofficial transcripts are acceptable; however, if you are selected for the position, you will be required to produce the original official transcripts.

PASS/FAIL COURSES: If more than 10 percent of your undergraduate course work (credit hours) were taken on a pass/fail basis, your claim of superior academic achievement must be based upon class standing or membership in an honor society.

GRADUATE EDUCATION: One academic year of graduate education is considered to be the number of credits hours your graduate school has determined to represent one academic year of full-time study. Such study may have been performed on a full-time or part-time basis. If you cannot obtain your graduate school's definition of one year of graduate study, 18 semester hours (or 27 quarter hours) should be considered as satisfying the requirement for one year of full-time graduate study.

FOREIGN EDUCATION: If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet the qualification requirements, you must show the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education. Pathways Intern -The Department of the Interior Internship Program (Pathways) is designed to provide students enrolled in a wide variety of educational institutions, from undergraduate to graduate level, with opportunities to work in agencies and explore Federal careers while still in school and while getting paid for the work performed.

Student Interns must continue to meet the Pathways Program requirements throughout the duration of the appointment. Incumbents will be required to provide proof of continued enrollment and good standing (as Defined by the educational institution), each semester/quarter or grading period throughout the internship program.

Interns may be non-competitively converted to a term, career-conditional or career appointment within 180 days following successful completion of all their educational and work requirements in accordance with 5 CFR 362.204.

PROGRAM COMPLETION AND CONVERSION ELIGIBILITY: Upon successful completion of their academic program and the internship requirements, interns may be converted to a term or permanent position in the competitive service consistent with agency needs, academic achievement, and demonstrated potential. Interns must meet the qualification requirements for the position to which they are converting. Conversion potential for this opportunity may be up to the GS-12 full performance level. However, future budgetary events, hiring restrictions, conversion caps, or other circumstances may preclude the conversion, or conversion to a position with the full potential performance level. Conversion to a competitive service position is not guaranteed.
