Duties

Help
  • You will lay out, cut, bend, and assemble various sizes and types of pipes and associated appurtenances required for potable water distribution systems.
  • You will perform fault locating, troubleshooting, preventive maintenance, repairs, installation and alterations to distribution and piping systems.
  • You will secure system for outages and supervise excavation.
  • You will make hydrostatic tests of various types of piping systems and pressure vessels to determine conformance to standards or to locate other defects.
  • You will perform minor repairs on leaks and/or clear obstructions to insure proper circulation, flow or pressure.

The Screen-out Element for this position is: ABILITY TO DO THE WORK OF THE POSITION WITHOUT MORE THAN NORMAL SUPERVISION 1) Uses various types of shop and portable machinery tools and equipment to cut, bend, silver solder, thread, caulk and assemble various types and sizes of pipes and fittings; 2) Inspects systems to ensure connections to pipes, tanks, pumps, pressure vessels, meters, traps, expansion joints, thermostats and various types of manual or mechanically operated valves are pressure tight.

PHYSICAL EFFORT
Handles pipes, valves, related pipe system, tools, portable pumps, chlorinators, valve operators, meters and equipment of various sizes that occasionally weight up to 100 pounds. Must work in confined spaces such as tanks, compartments, tunnels, manholes and trenches, or above ground level on trestles, bridges, staging, floating platforms and ladders. Requires crouching, kneeling, crawling, and climbing.

WORKING CONDITIONS
Approximately 95% of the work is performed outdoors. Required to work in open holes or trenches; in mud, water, wastewater, dust, dirt, or even uneven terrain; around vehicular traffic; in darkness with artificial lighting conditions. Works with burning, soldering and heating torches, chipping guns and toxic chemicals. Work in and around asbestos contaminated areas. Exposed to possible injury from falls, burns, muscular strain, falling objects, toxic or explosive gasses, asbestos, and cuts. Also exposed to the possibility of insect bites and stings. Position requires immunizations as recommended by health and industrial hygiene officials and wearing of full face respirators.

Performs incidental driving to and from the various work sites requiring a current state motor vehicle license.

This position is subject to emergency recall seven days a week, 24 hours a day.

The employee may be required to report for work at a location other than permanently assigned location.

Occasionally assigned duties require incumbent to enter into and work inside confined spaces. Incumbent will be required to receive pre-placement physical examination based upon the type of work to be performed and hazards to be encountered, an annual examination based on the potential of these hazards and a termination examination upon termination of employment or reassignment to other duties.
