Duties

Help
  • Determine optimal medical nutrition therapy utilizing the four-step nutrition care process: (1) nutrition assessment, (2) nutrition diagnosis, (3) nutrition intervention, and (4) nutrition monitoring, and evaluation for inpatients and outpatients.
  • Interview patients to obtain information concerning eating patterns, economic situation, cultural background, and other conditions, which influence food preferences and preparation.
  • Perform anthropometric measurements as needed to assess nutritional status.
  • Perform nutrient analysis of dietary intake and estimates nutrition requirements specific for the clinical condition.
  • Develop a nutritional care plan based on the providers diet prescription, the patients medical records, the information obtained from the interview, and nutritional requirements for a balanced meal plan.
  • Coordinate medical nutritional therapy and nutrition education activities while incorporating various patient-centered counseling and education techniques.
  • Plan, schedule, and conduct training programs using a wide range of tools to meet treatment goals and objectives for patients, families, and health center staff, concerning nutrition as it relates to particular diseases or to nutrition.

  • Applicants must be able to fulfill non-privileged professional credential requirements.
  • This position is a Testing Designated Position subject to pre-employment screening and random testing. Selectees will be required to consent to participation in random drug urinalysis testing.
  • This position has specific initial background investigation and periodic re-verification requirements since its duties require interaction with children and youth under the age of eighteen (18) years of age on a recurring basis.
  • This position is designated as Inclement Weather Essential. the incumbent must make every attempt to report for work on time and/or remain on duty during severe weather conditions.
  • Position is designated as Mission Essential. The incumbent will be required to report to work during times of contingency operations, natural disasters, extreme weather or other emergency situations.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Basic Requirement for Dietitian:

Degree: Bachelor's or graduate (or higher level) degree in the field of dietetics, food, nutrition, food service management, institution management, or related science. The curriculum must have been in accordance with the qualifying requirements established by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND) (formerly American Dietetic Association (ADA) prior to January 1, 2012) in effect at the time of graduation. The educational program must have been accredited by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND), or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained.

OR

Completion of a coordinated undergraduate program, internship, or other clinical component approved by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND) (formerly American Dietetic Association (ADA)) for dietitians or nutritionists.

OR

Completion of a coordinated undergraduate program, internship, or other clinical component approved by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND) (formerly American Dietetic Association (ADA)) for dietitians or nutritionists.

OR

Exemption: You are exempt from the basic requirements above if you are a current federal employee occupying a position in the 0630 occupational series and have been continuously employed in this occupational series since September 27, 2017 or before. Note: You will be required to provide appropriate documentation to the respective Human Resources Office to validate your status.

In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 grade level in the Federal service which includes performing nutritional assessments based on laboratory data; implementing nutritional services or medical nutrition therapy; developing an individualized nutrition plan; and assisting patients in creating long-term nutritional goals. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-11).

Registration: You must possess and maintain a current professional registration as a registered dietitian (RD) from the Commission on Dietetic Registration of The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND), or formerly known as The American Dietetic Association (ADA).

Education

FOREIGN EDUCATION: If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet the qualification requirements, you must show the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
