About the Position: This position falls under Defense Health Agency, Naval Medical Center Portsmouth under Clinical Nutrition responsible for the preparation of enteral nutrition for infants in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Pediatric Intensive Care Unit and pediatric wards and assist in the assessment, planning, and evaluation of medical nutrition therapy for all patients. Duties

Help
  • Serves as a member of the medical team with primary responsibility for enteral nutrition preparation for all designated pediatric, and NICU patients.
  • Attends inpatient medical rounds, and actively presents nutrition concerns to doctors, nurses, and other allied health care providers.
  • Provides clinical nutrition education to family members and other staff as needed on infant formulas, fortifications and feeding practices. Completes breast milk analysis with individual adjustments in feeding/formulation for each infant.
  • Provides guidance regarding issues such as policies, procedures, and current practices in enteral nutrition preparation and products, as well as inpatient neonatal and pediatric feeding practices and procedures.
  • Responsible for patients with certain nutritionally related diseases or wound healing problems.
  • Counsels and screens patients to identify nutrition problems, drug-nutrient interactions and provides patient instruction, education and counseling.
  • Conducts weekly nutrition education classes to patients and family members.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Ability to lift approximately 20 pounds.
  • Required to obtain necessary immunizations (i.e., Hepatitis B, annual influenza) unless exempted by a physician.
  • The individual assigned to or subject to being assigned to providing direct patient care, either diagnostic or therapeutic must possess and maintain: Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Personnel involved in the delivery of healthcare to children under the age of eighteen-years-old on a frequent and regular basis must receive Federal Bureau of Investigation fingerprint check and State Criminal History Repositories check.
  • The individual will work an 80 hour pay period to include shifts, weekends, holidays and evenings on a rotational basis, as needed.
  • This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment. A background investigation and credit check are required.
  • This position requires a pre-employment physical.

Specialized Experience: 1 year specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level GS-05 which includes teaching nutrition classes, providing nutrition counseling/education or preparing infant formulas.

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
